Why Charlie Taylor’s new deal with Burnley would be good for the club

Reports from LancsLive have confirmed that Charlie Taylor has signed a new deal with Burnley, committing his future to the Clarets until 2024.

The left-back joined Burnley in 2017 from Leeds United and his current contract was set to expire in June 2021. Instead, he opted to be at the club and signed a new deal with them.

Taylor featured in all 38 matches in the Premier League last season but the arrival Erik Pieters has pushed him to the bench. As a result, the former Leeds star has appeared in just 3 games this season for the Clarets.

Despite the lack of game time, the club have announced that Taylor has put pen to paper on a new deal. Taylor has become the latest member of Sean Dyche’s Burnley squad to strike a new deal, following the footsteps of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Since arriving in Burnley in 2017, Taylor has been a regular member of Dyche’s squad and made his 50^th appearance for the club earlier this season. As reported, the 26-year-old believes that he is ready to build upon his solid start and is hopeful that the best years of his career are yet to come.

Taylor was an integral member of Dyche’s squad that finished 7^th in the 2017/18 Premier League season, marking the club’s highest-ever finish in the top-flight. They qualified to play in the Europa League the following season but eventually lost in the play-offs to Genk.

As of now, Burnley have only two established left-backs in Erik Pieters and Charlie Taylor, and a new deal for Taylor would be a confidence booster. Though Pieters is the first choice in that position, Dyche would have an able backup in Taylor in the event of an injury.

Taylor has the ability to play in every match just like he did in the previous campaign. As per whoscored, Taylor registered an average of 1 tackle, 1 interception and 1.3 clearances per game last season in the league. He also enjoyed passing with an average success rate of 72.9%.

At 25, Taylor has the energy to cover the left side of the pitch and could be a valuable player for Dyche, allowing him to switch between his left-backs if needed.
