Celtic loaning out this versatile 23-year-old ace to rivals would be a logical move

Why Celtic should consider a loan move for Lewis Morgan in January

According to The Scottish Sun, St. Mirren manager Jim Goodwin has expressed his desire to sign Celtic winger Lewis Morgan on loan when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Buddies’ gaffer has openly discussed his willingness to bring the 23-year-old attacker back to Paisley on a temporary deal during the mid-season trading period to bolster his resources (h/t Scottish Sun).

Goodwin plans to open negotiations with Celtic over a potential loan deal for Morgan, who has found himself warming the benches at Parkhead more often than not under the stewardship of Neil Lennon this term (h/t Scottish Sun).

The Greenock-born star spent nine years in the youth system at Rangers but he switched boats to join St. Mirren back in 2013.

Morgan went on to establish himself as a regular fixture for St. Mirren in the Scottish Championship in the following seasons before his red-hot form in the first half of the 2017-18 campaign prompted Old Firm giants Celtic to swoop for him in January 2018.

The 23-year-old was immediately loaned back to his former club for the remainder of that season and Morgan went on to play a key role in the Saints’ surge for promotion back to the top-flight with an overall tally of 18 goals and 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

The stage looked set for him to challenge for a substantial role at Celtic under former manager Brendan Rodgers but he was farmed out on loan to EFL League One outfit Sunderland in January 2019 after mustering only 13 appearances in the first half of the previous campaign.

Morgan, who has been capped twice by Scotland at the senior international level, hasn’t had the best of times since returning to his parent club this summer.

The 23-year-old went on to feature prominently during the Hoops’ qualifying campaign in Europe but he has found his involvement severely restricted on the domestic front.

The versatile winger has only made three appearances for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership thus far, with his only start coming way back in August in the 5-2 demolition of Motherwell.

To put things into perspective, Lewis Morgan is currently way down the pecking order at Parkhead and a loan move to St. Mirren during the mid-season trading period would be in the best interests of all parties involved.

With Neil Lennon showing faith in Southampton loanee Mohamed Elyounoussi – while James Forrest and Ryan Christie are more accomplished players – Morgan has had to settle for a bit-part role so far.

Things are unlikely to change in the second half of the campaign, particularly with arch-rivals Rangers going toe-to-toe with the Hoops in the title race this term.

The Saints are struggling in the bottom half of the standings, following a slow start to their campaign and the arrival of Morgan in January could be the boost they need to avoid relegation.

With that in mind, Celtic should not hesitate to arrange a loan move for Lewis Morgan when the transfer window reopens in January.
