Why Celtic should beat Rangers in their pursuit of Gwion Edwards

Share

There are only two clubs at the start of the Scottish Premiership season that are willing to go big for the title, well until this season it was left to just one club, Celtic. With Rangers coming back into the top flight, things will get extremely interesting as both the Old Firm rivals battle it out for Scotland’s top league.

The Gers seem to be on a signing rampage as they have brought in five players, some young and some old into their squad and under manager Mark Warburton, they seem to be doing a pretty good job of their recruitment policy.

Celtic, on the other hand, have brought in a new manager, the former Liverpool and Swansea man Brendan Rodgers and they are also looking to the transfer window in hopes of making their team stronger for the upcoming season but more importantly for the Champions League qualification rounds, which will be a true test for Rodgers.

While both clubs are fighting it out for a few common signings, one player seems to be involved in a massive tug of war and that rather surprisingly is Gwion Edwards. The 23-year-old hasn’t really been in the limelight a lot in the recent weeks but the Crawley Town winger seems to be set to join one of the Old Firm rivals.

A downward trajectory since his time with Swansea

Edwards broke onto the footballing scene during his time at Swansea under Brendan Rodgers. The Welsh winger won multiple reserve titles with the Swans and was expected to achieve far greater things when he was loaned out to St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

Even after a decent spell at the club, he joined Crawley on loan in 2014 and has been at the League Two side ever since.  Edwards however was one of the bright sparks in the campaign for Crawley and is set to join a bigger club in the summer.

He does have 12 league goals to his name during his time at the club and between the two Old Firm rivals, if should be Celtic who must beat Rangers to the signing of the talented winger. The 23-year-old must be well known to Brendan Rodgers and that in itself will help in the decision taken by the Welsh player.

Celtic are also in a much better position, financially and in a footballing sense as well, since they have the chance of playing in the Champions League next season, which still is dependent on them making it through the qualification rounds.

The only problem that could for the Hoops is the fact that they have a number of players already at the club who can play out wide or in attack and unless Rodgers decides to let a few of them leave, Tom Rogic could be one, then it doesn’t really make sense for the 23-year-old to move to Glasgow.

Celtic and Rodgers have a lot of work to do and signing Edwards could be a major coup for the player and the manager.
