According to The Express, Barcelona are eyeing a raid on Sassuolo star Stefano Sensi, who currently plies his trade with Inter Milan.
The report confirms that Barcelona chief Eric Abidal is keen on two of Inter Milan’s players, who have impressed this season, one is striker Lautaro Martinez and the other being midfielder Stefano Sensi.
Sensi, 24, moved on a loan deal from Sassuolo to San Siro in the summer. Within a few months with the Nerazzurri, the dynamic midfielder rose to prominence with his eye-catching displays. He was underrated in his time at Sassuolo and under Antonio Conte this season, Sensi’s performance has been highly applauded.
There are no doubts over his potential and with Barcelona making their interest known in the Italian, it is safe to say Sensi has come a long way since his youthful days at Cesena Berretti.
Barcelona, on the other hand, are currently on top of the La Liga table, with just goals separating them from Real Madrid, who also have the same points (34). They have also progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League after topping their group.
Initially, the Catalan giants struggled despite bringing in Frenkie De Jong to take control of their midfield but now they seem to have regrouped and are performing like they usually do. In spite of doing well, there might be concerns for Ernesto Valverde to strengthen his squad.
Ivan Rakitic has fallen out of favour under Valverde and the Croatian has been linked with many other teams like Manchester United and Inter Milan, who are trying to take him away from Camp Nou after his uncomfortable situation at the club.
In that case, Stefano Sensi would be a powerful addition to Valverde’s squad.
Predominantly a central midfielder, Sensi has done exceptionally well as an attacking player. He was mainly used as a defensive midfielder during his time at Sassuolo. He has adapted well at Inter under Conte and is capable of playing anywhere on the field.
This season, in the 7 league games he has played for Inter, Conte’s side were powerful and were on a good streak. Sensi’s injury meant his team was off-balance in the midfield as they failed in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Parma.
The Italian has been the main man in the middle this season for Inter Milan until his injury forced him out of action. They went on to lose 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Thus, he has been the engine for Conte’s side.
He’s considered to be a highly intelligent midfielder and in Barcelona, Sensi can go on to become one of the best alongside the likes of Sergio Busquets and Frenkie De Jong. He would surely give Valverde a different dimension to his game plan.
At 24, Sensi has grown to be a dynamic midfielder with a certain skillset which is very rare in modern football. His work rate on the pitch can be more effective for Barcelona, who can expect him to continue for a long time at the highest level.
Therefore, Barcelona must not hesitate to sign the young sensation despite the fact that Inter may not be willing to leave him after just one season with them.
