Why Aston Villa Must Sign Massimo Luongo In The Summer

As per a report from Australian outlet the World Game, EFL Championship side Aston Villa are plotting a summer swoop for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Massimo Luongo.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a fine season on a personal level and has been attracting interest from several quarters, with La Liga outfit Malaga and Premier League side Crystal Palace also monitoring his situation, according to the aforementioned report.

Having started his career in his homeland of Australia, Luongo moved to England for the first time in 2011 when he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder had a number of loan spells away from the North London outfit, with Ipswich Town and Swindon Town, before making a permanent move to Swindon in the summer of 2013, without breaking into Spurs’ senior team.

After impressing with Swindon over a spell of two years where he went on to make 102 appearances, Luongo was snapped up by QPR in 2015, where has grown into an integral part of the team over the last few seasons.

The 25-year-old has made 106 appearances for the Hoops since his move, in which he has registered 7 goals and 12 assists. The 2017/18 campaign has been his best in terms of goals scored, as he has managed to find the net on 6 occasions in 36 games across competitions, setting up 3 for his teammates.

Capable of playing anywhere in the midfield, be it as a defensive midfielder or in a traditional No.8 position, Luongo has shown that he is more than a handy player to have in the squad.

The Australian international is very adept at breaking up the play in the middle of the park, with strong tackles and smart interceptions. He is known for his brilliant work ethic in the middle. A decent dribbler of the ball as well, the 25-year-old has also added goals to his game this season, which makes him a valuable asset to any side.

Aston Villa are hoping to earn promotion back to the Premier League and are currently placed 4th in the English second tier with five games left to be played in the season. Manager Steve Bruce will be keen on strengthening his side in the summer, especially if they manage to make it through the promotion playoffs.

The Villans have a number of options in the central midfield area – Glenn Whelan, Mile Jedinak, Conor Hourihane, Birkir Bjarnason and Henri Lansbury. However, both Jedinak and Whelan are not getting younger while Lansbury hasn’t been able to find his feet at the Villa Park since joining the club in January 2017.

As a result, adding Luongo to the side would be an excellent decision for Villa. He is only 25 years old but has gathered plenty of experience both at the club and international level. He has been capped 31 times by the Australian national team in which he has scored 5 times. The midfielder has his best years still ahead of him.

He has two years left on his contract with QPR and they will fight to keep their in-form player. However, Villa should go for him in the summer.
