Everton signing one of Serie A’s best this January would make them a rock-solid defensive unit

Why Armando Izzo would be a good signing for Everton

The pressure is starting to build on Everton manager Marco Silva, who is in desperate need of a win.

Three straight Premier League defeats, making it four defeats in five, have seen Everton drop to 15th in the table. Last week’s performance against Manchester City was much improved, but it didn’t fetch the result that Silva and the fans desperately needed.

Silva must look for different ways to motivate his players as his team is completely lacking confidence at the moment. The Portuguese tactician needs to find a way to win games. If he can turn things around and get the Toffees back on track, the first and foremost thing he must do in January is addressing his defensive problems.

Everton currently have just Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate as senior centre-backs, and Silva must be aware that should injury strike any of them, the club could be in a nervy position.

The Toffees attempted to re-sign former loan star Kurt Zouma in the summer, but Chelsea weren’t willing to sell. Thus, signing a centre-back has to be a high priority for the Merseysiders in January.

Back in July, Liverpool Echo had claimed that Everton were interested in signing Torino defender Armando Izzo. The Italian played a vital role in Torino’s seventh-placed finish in the Serie A last season.

The centre-back has made an impressive start to 2019/20 season and though he signed a new contract with Torino in July, that shouldn’t stop Everton from rekindling their interest in Armando Izzo.

Izzo, 27, was one of the best defenders in the Serie A last season and he could make an instant impact at Everton. Standing at 6ft tall, he isn’t the tallest or commanding of defenders but still has the ability to outmuscle his opponent in the air and win headers.

The Italy international is known for his ability on the ball, never afraid to come out of his line and pick out midfielders and wingers with his smart passes.

The former Genoa man is extremely confident in his technical skills and though he is nowhere near as physically imposing as Mina or Keane, he is extremely composed and is an excellent reader of the game.

That makes Izzo very difficult to beat in a one-vs-one situation. A fantastic tackler and interceptor, Izzo definitely is a player Everton must consider.

Verdict

The Italian is approaching his peak and bagging his signature in January would be quite the coup given that Everton don’t have European football this season.
