Why a season-long loan deal for this 22-year-old Man City starlet could solve Leeds’ problems in goal

According to an exclusive report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are planning a loan swoop for Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The 22-year-old, who spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan with Norwich City, is highly regarded by the Premier League champions, with manager Pep Guardiola understood to be an admirer of the Englishman.

However, with Ederson Moraes and Claudio Bravo ahead of him in the pecking order, he could be sent out on loan once again next season. Leeds reportedly want to capture the signing of the promising youngster.

Having started out with the academy of Norwich, the player switched to the City youth setup at the age of 15 and has grown into one of the brightest young talents at the Citizens’ academy. The 22-year old, however, is yet to make his senior bow for the Sky Blues.

Gunn joined Norwich on a season-long loan last summer and emerged as one of the best in his position in the EFL Championship.

The 22-year-old featured in every league game for the Canaries this term, keeping 15 clean sheets in the process. His tally of 139 saves in the English second division is the second best in the competition, only behind Ipswich Town’s Bartosz Bialkowski.

Standing over 6ft 4in, the Manchester City starlet cuts an imposing presence in the box and shows good awareness and domination in the area. Composure, good reflexes, strong reactions and his ability with the ball at his feet make Gunn a very promising prospect.

Leeds would benefit immensely by his arrival in the summer. The Whites struggled for most parts of the season with their goalkeepers.

Felix Wiedwald, who came in last summer from Germany, hardly inspired confidence, with shoddy, inconsistent displays between the sticks, while senior pro Andy Lonergan also failed to shine for the Yorkshire-based outfit.

The inconsistency and the erroneous nature of the two senior goalkeepers saw manager Paul Heckingbottom entrust academy graduate Bailey Peacock-Farrell with the goalkeeping duties towards the end of the campaign. Though Leeds’ form did not improve, the youngster did perform admirably, despite shipping in a lot of goals.

With both Lonergan and Wiedwald facing uncertain futures at the club and Peacock-Farrell still earning his spurs in the senior team, making a move for Gunn makes a lot of sense for the Whites.

The 22-year-old proved himself at this level with the Canaries last season and has all the necessary qualities to make an impact at the Elland Road should Leeds be able to sign him in the summer.
