Rangers’ deal for 37-year-old star is absolute gold – would help them end Celtic’s domination

Why a new deal for Allan McGregor is a smart job done by Rangers

Rangers have announced a new extended deal for goalkeeper Allan McGregor until 2021.

The former Scotland goalkeeper, 37, rejoined the Gers in May last year on a two-year contract. He has made over 250 appearances for Rangers, winning three league titles in his first spell and was a part of the side that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

Allan McGregor left to join Besiktas in 2012 and spent a season in Turkey before a five-year stint at Hull City. Since returning to Ibrox in 2018, the veteran shot-stopper has been a key part of Rangers’ resurgence under Steven Gerrard, making 29 appearances this season.

The news of McGregor extending his deal comes a couple of days after Steven Gerrard signed fresh terms of his own until 2024.

Rangers are in with a real chance of winning the league title this season. Gerrard has done a fantastic job since arriving at the Ibrox in 2018 and even though his team lost the Scottish League Cup final to Celtic last weekend, he would have been proud of his boys’ performance at the Hampden Park.

The 39-year-old tactician would know which players will help Rangers end Celtic’s domination in Scotland and thus, a new contract for McGregor is a right move.

McGregor is Gerrard’s undisputed first-choice in goal. He has been superb for the team and was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the 2018/19 campaign. The 37-year-old is indispensable to Gerrard as he has the knowledge of what it is like to play for Rangers and can pass that on to other players.

Verdict

Having an experienced head like McGregor is vital for the Gers. He can be a mentor for the younger players and can push the rest of the squad. He knows what it takes to win and how to manage difficult situations. Furthermore, the veteran shot-stopper also has a big say in the dressing room and certainly plays a crucial role off the pitch.

McGregor has been a big part of Rangers’ success due to his consistency in goal this season and a new deal is very well deserved.
