Why Signing Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater Would Work Out Well For West Ham United

As per a report from The Telegraph, Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has attracted attention from West Ham United.

An earlier report from The Telegraph claimed that the former Leicester City star is unhappy with the lack of game time he has received, which has prompted speculation about an impending exit. His current contract with the club runs until 2022 but as things stand, Chelsea could lose the midfielder this summer to London rivals West Ham.

Having joined the club in a deadline day move last summer, Drinkwater has hardly featured for Chelsea. He was injured initially but even after recovering and gaining match fitness, we have seen him appear sporadically for the Blues.

Despite the fact that the player enjoyed a strong central midfield partnership with N’Golo Kante back at Leicester, Antonio Conte has preferred playing the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko ahead of him.

After Nemanja Matic’s departure to Manchester United, a lot was riding on Drinkwater’s shoulders to fill the void. However, he has failed to live up to his billing and it might be best for Chelsea to let him leave.

The need for a quality midfielder is quite clear at Stamford Bridge and Drinkwater’s potential exit will definitely create a greater void. From the player’s perspective, his future does not look all that great at Chelsea and perhaps a move to a different club could help him garner more time on the field.

This is where the Hammers come in. After a lacklustre season, David Moyes’ men are fighting tooth-and-nail to survive in the Premier League. Should they manage to preserve their top-flight status, they will need reinforcements in a lot of areas, in order to do better next season.

An experienced and seasoned Premier League player like Drinkwater could go a long way in helping them improve their performances in the middle of the park.

Currently, West Ham have the likes of Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble and Edimilson Fernandes as regular first-team options in the central midfield area. In order to elevate their game and compete on a greater level next season, the club could benefit by signing Drinkwater.

The only stumbling block for the Hammers could be the price tag. But needless to say, the club must prioritise securing their top-flight position for the time being.
