According to reports in the Daily Mail, Premier League champions Manchester City have signed 16-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu from Shamrock Rovers for £420,000. Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea were also interested in the youngster, who has already played first-team football in the league of Ireland.
Bazunu also played in his club’s Europa League qualifiers, only to be eliminated by Swedish side AIK. He made his first-team debut in June and managed to keep four clean sheets. He has played for Ireland in the U15 level.
Now, he joins a star-studded Manchester City team, with an expectation to improve his game and get into the first-team at the Etihad Stadium.
Here’s everything you need to know about the player:
One thing to note about Bazunu is that he has spent time with some prominent English clubs in the past – Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion. He has had a trial with Scottish champions Celtic, leaving manager Brendan Rodgers impressed.
Liverpool were also scouting him in the summer, which just goes to show why City have bagged a quality shot-stopper at such a young age. (Independent)
Bazunu is a tall individual (189 cm), so he has a good reach. He is comfortable in picking up crosses and punching the balls away. His height allows him to cover more of the goal while making a save.
The 16-year-old is also comfortable in coming out of his line and be a sweeper keeper when required. Of course, at the age of 16, he has to learn a lot of things before staking a claim at the highest level, but things have been good so far.
At Manchester City, he will be able to learn the trade in a magnified manner, which would groom him to become one of the best in the business sooner than later. The Cityzens have got a quality keeper, who has enough potential to be a top-class addition to their senior squad.
