Angel Gomes

Scout Report – Angel Gomes

The 17-year-old Angel Gomes recently signed a professional contract with Manchester United. The youngster has already been quite a familiar face among the Old Trafford faithful. Last season, he became the youngest player ever to receive the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award. He has also appeared for the first-team, which made him the youngest player since United legend Duncan Edwards to make an appearance with the big boys.

This contract will undoubtedly come as immense encouragement for Gomes, who looks like one of the most promising youth stars to emerge out of the club’s academy in recent times. Let’s take a closer look at his profile.

History

Born in 2000 in London, England, Gomes joined the Manchester United academy at the tender age of 6. He signed a formal contract when he was 13 and steadily rose through the ranks to establish himself. He even won an opportunity to represent the U17 side in October 2013.

He regularly played as a substitute for the U18s while attending school and made his first appearance at the age of 14. Eventually, the player made his debut for Manchester United in the final day game against Crystal Palace last season.

He came on for Wayne Rooney and put up quite a solid display. Now, with a professional contract in hand, Gomes will aspire to achieve greater things at Old Trafford to progress further. As far as the international career goes, he has appeared for the England U16, U17 and U18 sides on several occasions.

Playing Style

Despite being so young, Gomes boasts of astounding finishing skills. He is quite versatile and fits into a lot of attacking positions but he thrives as a central attacking midfielder. His passing accuracy, speed and intelligence make him ideal for that role. He seems to have a penchant for running and has electrifying pace, which makes it very difficult for opponents to mark him.

Gomes may look small but he can use his body quite well to seem physically imposing and get his way. He has also shown his leadership skills, having donned the captain’s armband on a couple of occasions in his career so far.

Gomes’ Future

Gomes undoubtedly has a big future ahead of him but most of that will come down to how well he takes his opportunities. He will obviously not get to be a part of the first-team already. A long road awaits him as he settles into life with the reserves and then becomes dominant enough to progress further. This will be an important transition phase in his career and like everybody else at Old Trafford, the youngster himself will be eager to make his dream of playing for the first-team a reality.
