Best Midfield In the Premier League

The heart of any good team is their midfield, the start of many attacks and often the first actual line of defence, the importance of a good working midfield can never be underestimated. The role of midfielders has seen a number of changes throughout the years, especially when it comes to their formations.

Gone are the days when teams play with 4 midfielders across the pitch, two in the centre and two wide helping out the attack. Football has gone through an evolution and will continue to do so, the same applies to the midfield, along with every other position in the game. The Premier League has had a great history of amazing midfields, who can forget the United team which included Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and Keane or the Liverpool midfield of Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano? We look at the current crop of teams in the Premier League and try to come up with which team has the best midfield in the country.

Three-way battle but a blue comes out on top

We start with Manchester City, they might have lost James Milner in this transfer window, but a midfield of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Fernando, Jesus Navas or Samir Nasri isn’t the worst in the world. Sure some of the players might have underperformed last season but that should not take anything away from their ability. We have seen the likes of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure especially control matches all on their own, one bad season does not make this a bad midfield, it just isn’t the best midfield in England.

Arsenal’s midfield surely is one of the strongest in the world, especially thanks to a number of good players in the team. Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Francis Coquelin, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and a few more, that midfield is frightening and what would be even tougher for Arsene Wenger is to choose the players who start in the positions. Arsenal have great attacking options in their midfield and thanks to the form of Coquelin last season, they seem to have found the player who could solve their midfield defensive problems for a long time to come, the only problem with this midfield is that it could be a little too lightweight and can be dominated by other tougher midfields.

Talking about domination, we saw how dominating Chelsea were in last season’s race for the league title. Chelsea have the best midfield in England, easily, the likes of Matic, Fabregas, Ramires, Mikel, Willian and these are just the first team players, the club also have a ton of talented players out on loan. The most important factor into making this team with the best midfield was the ability to control games and win them, Chelsea certainly did a lot of that last season and deserve the title of having the best midfield, they might have relied too much on Fabregas and Matic but that bore them the fruits for last season’s triumph.
