Match Report: Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Rangers

Rangers ended their pre-season campaign on a high, beating EFL Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Sunday.

Pedro Caixinha fielded as many as six new signings in the starting line-up as summer signing Eduardo Herrera started upfront with veteran forward Kenny Miller for support. Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso started in the heart of the defence with Lee Hodson and Lee Wallace at the full-back positions and Wes Foderingham in goal. The midfield was occupied by Daniel Candeias, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans and Josh Windass.

The visitors started the game brightly and it was Miller who had the first chance at goal, with Windass putting in a delightful ball into the middle, but the 39-year headed the ball wide. The Gers than had a goal from Herrera ruled out for offside, with Windass being the culprit in the build-up. Things slowed down as the half progressed though, with both teams not creating a lot chances.

There was one worrying moment near the 40th minute mark, when Alves conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position, but the Gers managed to avoid any damage, despite looking slightly shaky. They however managed to take the lead in the 42nd minute, through Windass’ simple finish after Jack’s brilliant delivery. Jordan Rhodes had a chance at the other end for the Owls, but Foderingham dealt comfortably with his header and half-time arrived with the Scottish club leading 1-0.

The second period began with a nervous opening for Rangers as Wednesday were in with a couple of very good chances, but Cardoso dealt with the danger on both occasions. Foderingham then pulled off a great save from Rhodes to keep his team in the lead. But against the run of play, the Gers scored again as Miller bundled home in the 55th minute, after some fine work down the left-hand side by Wallace. With 20 minutes left, Foderingham was forced into action once again, this time by George Boyd, but he made another brilliant save to deny the home team.

Caixinha made his first change in the 74th minute, with Niko Kranjcar coming on for Windass. Alfredo Morelos was thrown in for Herrera for the last ten minutes, as things began to slow down. The Gers made one more change in the final five minutes, as Danny Wilson replaced Miller to reinforce the defence. Martyn Waghorn and Jason Holt also were thrown into action in the dying moments as Caixinha’s side held on to win the game comfortably.

It was a strong performance from the Gers, with Windass and Foderingham particularly standing out while new signings Herrera and Jack fared well too. The result will have pleased the manager, as they gear up to face Motherwell in the season opener next weekend.
