Though Arsenal did not win any silverware last season, their performances at times were quite good and worth appreciating, which earned them the respect that they deserve as a top club. Arsene Wenger ensured that his side salvaged some pride with a second spot finish over fierce rivals Tottenham, in the Premier League and with some decent performances in other cup competitions as well. However, winning hearts does not matter at the end, when the team can’t produce the right kind of results.
Quite a few crucial players who could have made a difference to the side were injured, though the one’s that were playing for the French manager were not any less talented as well. Despite that, the results did not come, for any number of reasons whatsoever and it was just one of those seasons for the Gunners, where luck was not on their side.
One player who looked good on his return to the side after a long term injury was England international Jack Wilshere, who is now with Roy Hodgson’s side in France for the Euro 2016 tournament.
The 24 year old midfielder was not on top of his game, since regaining his fitness and looked a bit rusty. He was given a few games in the league, to have a go and impressed the manager of The Three Lions to be included in the team, over some of his compatriots.
Despite that, the main question now remains about Wilshere’s fitness and whether or not he will be able to capture a regular place in the starting eleven of the north London side or not.
There were claims that the former Bolton loanee could have left the Emirates, if Wenger had left the club earlier, with Manchester City looking to add him to their squad at the Etihad. Though, with the Frenchman still stubborn enough to not give up so easily without winning the top flight of English football once again, it could mean that the play-maker might not be going anywhere.
One more thing that is to be noted is the fact that Wilshere had mentioned some time ago that he prefers to play a more central role, rather than on the wings. This could mean that Wenger might have a dilemma in the upcoming season, as to what position to assign him.
With the amount of competition at the moment in Wenger’s squad and the fitness issues that Wilshere has, it will be tough for him to grab a regular place in the starting eleven, though the Englishman will surely not give up. He is a strong player, who depicts quick moment and good passing and is a decent finisher as well.
He can play as an attacking midfielder, a winger and even a holding midfield role, if needed, though Wenger does not really seem to push him back into the heart of his side. How the French manager now decides to use him remains to be seen. Wilshere is still an asset to Arsenal and losing him could weaken the squad. Definitely!!
