Declan Rice’s rise has been unprecedented this season and was completely out of the blue for West Ham but it certainly came at the right time. The Hammers lost Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere to injuries, and the 20-year-old was called into action by manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Since then, the Englishman hasn’t lost his place in the team, and together with Mark Noble, the two have been inseparable. However, despite the young starlet’s rise, West Ham need to make sure that their summer additions include a few midfielders.
Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere’s perennial injury issues keep a talented star out of the team, while Carlos Sanchez is 33 years old and isn’t getting any younger.
Meanwhile, reports have already emerged linking Pedro Obiang (Sun) with a move away and that leaves the club with just Mark Noble and Rice himself.
While the club and their scouting department will have their own targets, one player that the Hammers should make a move for is Maycon. Currently at Shakhtar Donetsk, the 21-year-old has been one of the standout stars for the Premier Liga side this season.
He’s made 26 appearances in all competitions, producing six goals. The Brazilian’s catalogue of skills are an attraction and though he is predominantly a central midfielder, Maycon has been used deeper by Shakhtar this season.
That move did take some time but the youngster showed that his presence is not only useful as a box-to-box midfielder but even as a deep-lying playmaker if needed.
That combined with his technical skills, and composure makes Maycon perfect for that role. He further amplifies that fact with his defensive and offensive contributions, combining the best of both worlds.
It was one of the reasons why Arsenal targeted the 21-year-old a little over a year ago, but no move materialised (Daily Mail).
The Hammers have to make a move for the young 21-year-old as they need a long-term replacement for Mark Noble who is on the wrong side of his 30s.

Adding someone as talented as Maycon will help West Ham move forward. And the youngster could help them prepare for a future without Mark Noble.
