How well did Manchester United’s new signings fare in the first game? (By the numbers)

Share

Manchester United had a tough outing in the opening game of the season. They were lucky to win 1-0 against a good Tottenham team, who would feel disappointed at not scoring a goal against United when they had a plethora of chances.

Louis Van Gaal along with his signings

It certainly was a better result than the first game last season when United lost. The club did give debuts to many players and we rate the performances of the new boys who donned the Manchester United jersey.

Sergio Romero: 7/10

Well he isn’t a David de Gea or a Victor Valdes but Romero did a decent enough job, especially when he denied Christian Eriksen, as he denied the Danish midfielder twice. Romero looked a little nervous, he was playing his first professional game for a long time and his distribution was rather of target. The Argentine though has played under Louis van Gaal and the Dutch manager should know how to deal with low confidence. Romero’s second half showing proves he still has a lot of quality, he just needs to regain his confidence.

Matteo Darmian: 9/10

Darmian was the one of the bright spots for Manchester United this season

The best player on the pitch on the first game of the season, Darmian showed just why he is so highly rated and was fantastic in both attacking and defensive duties. Darmian marshalled the Tottenham attack really well and linked up with the Manchester United throughout the game. The 25-year-old looked like he has been a part of the United team for quite some time now and certainly could be one of the best signings of the season.

Memphis Depay: 7/10

The one player that everyone had kept their eye on, Memphis as he prefers to be called was expected to brighten up the Manchester United attack and he played behind Wayne Rooney in the number 10 role. While we say a few nifty tricks and runs by the Dutch youngster, he still needs a bit of time to adapt to the league. Memphis’ performance took a bit of a dip in the second half of the game but that shouldn’t faze the player, he still seems a great prospect for United.

Morgan Schneiderlin: 8/10

Schneiderlin was one of the more expensive signings of the season and he showed why he was tracked by Arsenal, amongst a lot of other clubs. He was the thorn in Tottenham’s side as he broke up a ton of Tottenham attacks and also had more tackles in the game than any other Manchester United player. Schneiderlin has fit into the team perfectly and looks like a player who can provide a lot of cover for the Manchester United defence.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: 6/10

Bastian Schweinsteiger comes in for Michael Carrick

Bastian came on late in the second half and while he did not have a lot of time to stamp his authority on the game, he did get booked for tripping Nacer Chadli. Bastian might not have had the best of debuts but at only £10 million, he could be an amazing bargain for Manchester United, as long as he can stay fit, something that was an issue at Bayern Munich last season.
