Well done Rowett – Why Stoke have pulled off a masterstroke by completing this £6.35m deal

According to reports, Stoke City have completed their first signing of the summer, having agreed on a £6.35m deal with Portuguese side Feirense for Oghenekaro Peter Etebo.

Etebo, 22, has signed a five-year deal with the Potters and he will display his skills in the upcoming World Cup with Nigeria.

New Stoke manager Gary Rowett faces a massive rebuilding job after the club were relegated from the Premier League last season. And Rowett has made his first summer signing in Etebo, who spent six months on loan with La Liga side Las Palmas last season.

Etebo kicked-off his career at Nigerian side Warri Wolves, spending two seasons in his native. He then moved to Feirense in Portugal a year later, eventually helping the club secure promotion to the top-flight.

After making 45 appearances for Feirense last season, Etebo played 12 times in the La Liga for Las Palmas, catching the attention of Stoke City.

As far as his style of play is concerned, the 22-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder who can also be deployed as a deep-lying playmaker. He is energetic and knows to use his physicality to great effect. The Nigerian is creative and possesses great vision coupled with exquisite passing abilities. Etebo is a tireless worker of the ball, often making intelligent runs in the box.

The midfield powerhouse is strong while attacking and equally disciplined while defending. In fact, he is the mould of an all-round midfielder who can offer his guile and invention to create chances as well as help do the dirty work.

Gary Rowett

The 22-year-old will add steel and bite to the Stoke midfield and due to his versatility, he will offer Rowett tactical flexibility. Etebo will offer a greater amount of dynamism when compared to the current crop of Stoke midfielders. Due to his industry and energy, the Nigerian should enjoy playing in the Championship.

As it stands, Rowett and Stoke have signed a brilliant player in Etebo, who has also played 14 times for Nigeria, scoring once.

His energy and drive in the midfield will help Stoke immensely as the 22-year-old has all the ingredients required to establish himself as a vital cog in the team’s engine. For £6.35m, Stoke have pulled off a masterstroke in Nigerian international Etebo.
