Videoton 2-2 Chelsea: Blues end UEL group stage as toppers

Chelsea were only able to manage a 2-2 draw against Videoton in the Europa League in mid-week. Two free-kicks from Willian and Olivier Giroud salvaged a point for the Blues on a night where looked set to lose the game.

The Blues took the lead at the Groupama Stadium at the half hour mark through Willian’s free-kick only to see an Ethan Ampadu own goal peg one back for the home side. Both sides were unable to take the lead going into half-time and wasted a number of good opportunities going forward.

Loic Nego then scored a superb volley in the second half to put the home side in the lead for the first time in the game. Olivier Giroud then came on as a substitute to level the matters 15 minutes before time.

Videoton were not allowing Chelsea to play their game as they piled the pressure on them in the early stages. Willy Caballero did make a couple of good saves as well to keep the London side in the game. Chelsea were struggling to get anything going at the other end of the pitch.

Willian’s impressive free-kick instilled a bit of confidence in Maurizio Sarri’s men but their lead stood for just two minutes before Amapdu headed the ball into his own net from a corner. Alvaro Morata came close on a few occasions as well and was denied by the goalkeeper.

But the Spaniard suffered an injury which forced him to come off for Giroud at half-time. The Frenchman took responsibility and scored Chelsea’s second free-kick in the final quarter.

Both sides pushed for a winner during the closing stages but none was able to find the back of the net. The draw saw Chelsea fail to maintain their 100% win record in the group but they finished at the summit.

Here’s how the Chelsea fans reacted to the 2-2 draw.
