According to a report from the Daily Star, Watford have joined the race for Bournemouth star Asmir Begovic. The 31-year-old goalkeeper struggled this season with the Cherries, after a falling out with manager Eddie Howe in January.
Things just went downhill from there for Begovic, with him struggling to get game-time, making just two appearances after that.
It’s one of the many reasons that Bournemouth struggled and to change that Howe is reportedly chasing after Stoke City star Jack Butland. The 25-year-old is wasted down in the Championship and deserves to play Premier League football, which is why he’s been linked with a move back.
However, if it does happen for the Cherries, then that does mean the end of Asmir Begovic’s career at the Vitality. That’s exactly why Watford need to win the race and given their goalkeeping situation, the Hornets need a brand new star.
At the moment, the club has Ben Foster, Heurelho Gomes, Pontus Dahlberg and Daniel Bachmann.
However, come the first of July, Gomes will officially become a free agent, which leaves 36-year-old Foster as the first choice. While the former Manchester United star has done well, his age has left him lacking certain attributes.
For example, he’s no longer as fast or as agile as he once was, with that often playing a part against the bigger Premier League sides. And if Watford are ever going to break into the top half of the top-tier, then they need a new pair of hands between the posts.
It’s why a move for Asmir Begovic makes so much sense. The report from the Daily Star has further added that the 31-year-old will hold a meeting with Howe to discuss his future.
No matter what way that meeting does go, Watford needs to convince Asmir Begovic that his future doesn’t lie at the Vitality but instead at Vicarage Road.
Because he is arguably one of the best men to help move the club forward in the right direction and towards the top-ten spots. That was on show during the first half of this season, when Begovic played an integral part in Bournemouth’s stunning first half.
It showed just how talented and reliable the former Chelsea shot-stopper can be and given the additions that Watford need elsewhere, few players would come cheaper.

Watford have a relatively good team at their disposal and manager Javi Gracia has proven to be a rather brilliant manager. Yet, that won’t be enough and with a few more additions, the Hornets can maybe start aiming for a top-ten place in the Premier League.
But before they can do that, one of their first moves has to be for a goalkeeper and adding Asmir Begovic would only help their cause.
