Why Patrick Cutrone is a smart signing for Nuno’s Wolves

Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of striker Patrick Cutrone from AC Milan last week. The 21-year-old, who scored 27 goals in 90 appearances for the Rossoneri after making his first-team debut in 2017, has signed a four-year deal at the Molineux.

Wolves punched above their weight upon their return to the Premier League last season, finishing seventh in the table and qualifying for Europe. They showed their ambition in the transfer market by signing the likes of Joao Moutinho, Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore.

However, the Midlands outfit couldn’t match last summer’s ambition as they were slow movers in the summer transfer window and only managed a handful of signings.

Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker have returned on a permanent basis while Jesus Vallejo, Pedro Neto and Patrick Cutrone are new faces in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Nuno was in the market for a new forward through the summer as his side prepare for their first season in the Europa League. Beyond the likes of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez, Wolves were very light in the striker department. That’s why the Midlands outfit spent big on Cutrone to lure him away from AC Milan.

Cutrone could have a big impact at the Molineux in the upcoming Premier League campaign. A return of three goals and two assists from 12 starts and 22 substitute appearances in the Serie A last season proves there is ability and Nuno could be the right manager to unlock the Italian’s true potential.

The 21-year-old would add another attacking dimension at Wolves, whilst providing competition to the likes of Jota and Jimenez.

The Italy international is a clever, hard-working and technically sound forward, whose ability to link-up play between the midfield and attack would undoubtedly help Wolves improve upon the fluidity of their play in the final third. Cutrone has a knack for scoring almost all kind of goals, and he is a live wire in and around the box.

He has a good turn of pace in his locker and is more than a goal poacher as he can carry the ball well and finish smartly.

The 21-year-old can stretch play with his sharp movements and link-up play, and he should fit Nuno’s system very well. However, it remains to be seen how Cutrone would adjust to the new environment.

Verdict

If Cutrone can quickly adapt to the demands of the Premier League, he’ll also boost the strength in depth of the Wolves squad now trying to negotiate the demands of European football and a place in the UEFA Europa League. All in all, the Italian is a smart signing for Nuno’s side.
