Van Gaal vs Moyes: Who Had A Better Win Record After 50 Games At Manchester United?

Van Gaal vs Moyes

Louis van Gaal completed 50 games at Manchester United but didn’t have a lot of time to celebrate as his side lost 2-1 to Swansea. The United boss might be enjoying some decent backing by the board, especially looking at the money he has spent in the transfer market and while people say that he has done better than David Moyes as he got them into the Champions League, the stats say something else.

50 games but which coach was better?

Moyes got only 51 games at Manchester United before he got the sack while Van Gaal is still the coach at the moment, it was a baptism of fire for Moyes to be honest. Taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to be a tough act to follow and the fact that he couldn’t qualify for the Europa League, let along the Champions League was a nail in his coffin.

Surprisingly, he wasn’t backed as well by the board either and only spent £67.7 million during his one season there, Louis van Gaal has spent close to £250 million so far and he could be spending more in the winter transfer window as United take part in the Champions League this season.

We look at the stats for the two managers at United.

Played Won Drawn Lost Goals For Goals Against
Van Gaal 50 27 12 11 81 47
Moyes 51 27 9 15 84 54

Moyes would be looking at these stats and thinking as to how he got sacked so quickly and Van Gaal is still enjoying the support of the board. Moyes and Van Gaal recorded the same number of wins in their games and granted Moyes lost more games, his United did score more than Van Gaal’s.

The most probable reason for the sacking of Moyes was the fact that Manchester United missed out on European competition altogether. Louis van Gaal’s side are not playing any pretty football at the moment but last season they got the job done and that was to ensure the club got back into the Champions League.

The other bit about why Van Gaal might still be at the club is that he has a history of coaching at top clubs, Barcelona, Ajax and Bayern Munich were all coached by Van Gaal before his time at Manchester United while Moyes only had Everton to show on his resume, which was of any repute. The reality is that United didn’t show any faith in Moyes due to the position they finished in the league that year, had Van Gaal repeated the same performance and finishing position that Moyes did, the Dutchman would have been sacked as well.
