Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Wolves: Spurs’ title hopes take damaging blow

Tottenham Hotspur missed out on the chance to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, having endured a costly 3-1 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Harry Kane fired Tottenham Hotspur ahead in the 22nd minute with a stunning left-footed shot from outside the box. Kane’s goal saw Spurs lead with a quarter of the match to play but Wolves came roaring back in the last 15 minutes as goals from Willy Boly, Raul Jimenez and Helder Costa stunned Wembley.

Going in search of a seventh successive win, Mauricio Pochettino’s side started well and came close through shots from Son Heung-min and Kieran Trippier, with the latter testing Rui Patricio with his free-kick from 25 yards.

Tottenham Hotspur, however, were lucky not to go a goal behind just after the quarter-hour mark when a free-kick, whipped in from the right by Ivan Cavaleiro, found the head of Ryan Bennett, but his effort went over the bar.

The hosts came close to taking the lead through Christian Eriksen but the Dane’s effort was denied by Patricio with a fine fingertip stop. But the Portuguese goalkeeper could not get enough of the ball to keep out Kane’s shot from his weaker left foot as the England striker celebrated his 157th goal in Tottenham colours.

Son Heung-min nearly doubled the lead for Spurs before half-time, only for his effort to marginally miss the target.

Spurs were punished ruthlessly by Wolves from giving too much leeway after the break. Wolves, who took complete control of possession after the break, were finally rewarded for their persistent attacking play, thanks to Boly’s header through Joao Moutinho’s corner.

Tottenham went 2-1 down after 10 minutes through Jimenez, who despite being surrounded by Spurs defenders, was able to find the bottom corner of the net with a toe poke.

And there was further blow to come for Pochettino’s side as Helder Costa scored past Lloris to give Wolves a massive three points at the Wembley.

Hugely disappointed with the defeat against Wolves, here’s how some fans reacted on Twitter.
