2 Players Burnley Should Look To Sign In January

Burnley have easily been the biggest surprise package of this season in the Premier League. The Clarets, against all odds, managed to break into the top four of the table on Tuesday, following their win 1-0 win over Stoke City.  

Although Wednesday night’s results have seen them move down to 6th place, Sean Dyche’s men still find themselves ahead of the likes of Arsenal and Everton. It is an unprecedented high for the Clarets and the progress that they have made after having been installed as the favourites to get relegated last season has been admirable to say the least.  

However, with still more than half the season left to be played, Dyche will know that his side have plenty left to do if they are to end the season around their current whereabouts. In order to achieve that, Burnley will look to strengthen their squad over the January window to improve their chances of a top-six finish. With that in mind, here we look at two players who could help the Clarets continue their strong start to the current campaign.

Kamil Grosicki (Hull City)

With Robbie Brady suffering a serious knee injury earlier this month, Burnley are left short of options on the flanks and this is a major area that Dyche will be keen on reinforcing in the coming month.  

Hull City’s Kamil Grosicki could be a viable option that the Clarets boss should consider taking a look at. The 29-year old has been in decent form for the struggling Tigers in the Championship this season, having scored 6 goals and 5 assists in 20 appearances. The Polish wide man impressed during his six-month stint in the Premier League last season with Hull, managing a tally of 5 assists in 15 top-flight games. 

Capable of playing on both the flanks, Grosicki possesses pace and is a good crosser of the ball as well. He isn’t shy of performing his defensive duties either. With Hull languishing in the bottom half of the second division, a chance to return to the top tier could sway him to consider a January move. 

Chancel Mbemba (Newcastle United)

The 23-year old Congolese defender has found less game time with the Tynesiders this season and it is hard to see that improving, given that manager Rafael Benitez has three very good options in the form of Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune.  

Mbemba has played just 8 times in all competitions for Newcastle this season, 5 of which have come in an unnatural left-back role. There is a good chance that he could look to move away if the opportunity presents itself in January.  

Mbemba enjoyed a great breakthrough season upon joining Newcastle in the summer of 2015 from RSC Anderlecht and was one of the bright spots for the Magpies in a season that ended in relegation. He may have not been able to get into Benitez’s plans since, but there is no doubt that he is a talented defender and has proven himself in the Premier League, in the 2015/16 season, and has done well each time he has been given a chance this season.  

With just Kevin Long as the backup for first choice defensive duo of Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, a move to sign Mbemba to strengthen the backline could prove to be a shrewd addition.
