Food For Thought: 2 Leeds United Players Who Could Leave The Club In The Summer

Share

Leeds United are in a pretty commanding position in the 2016-17 campaign of the Sky Bet EFL Championship. Sitting at the fourth position in the table, they now look well poised for the play-off spots for promotion to the Premier League.

Manager Gary Monk has done a fine job in moulding a decent squad into a strong outfit aiming to challenge for the promotion to the topmost echelon of the English football. However, the summer transfer window could see a few outgoings, owing to them being surplus to the requirements of the club and here we give you two such players, who could be moving away from the Elland Road after the end of the season:

Marcus Antonsson

As far as the striker’s role is concerned, it has been one-way traffic at the Elland Road, as Chris Wood has almost single-handedly made sure Leeds United are alive in the promotion battle. The prolific form of the New Zealand international has meant that a very able striker in the shape of Marcus Antonsson has become a barely used resource at Leeds.

Since joining Leeds United from Swedish club Kalmar FF in the summer, the 25-year old has found it hard to break into the starting line-up and has featured only 16 times in the Championship, that has totalled to just 577 minutes on the field, scoring just a single goal.  Monk is eyeing for a promotion at the end of the campaign, which would only further hamper Antonsson’s involvement. While a loan deal could also be on the cards, a permanent exit remains a probability.

Ross Turnbull

The Whites have persisted with the 37-year old Robert Green between the sticks as their no. 1 goalkeeper this season and it has yielded great dividends, with the Englishman accumulating 13 clean sheets from 37 Championship appearances, adding great resilience at the back for Leeds.

However, the elder statesman’s amazing consistency has led to a harsh overlooking of Ross Turnbull, who is currently the third choice goalkeeper of the Premier League hopefuls. Having joined in the summer of 2015 from Barnsley, his debut season was hampered by injuries, which meant Marco Silvestri was given the opportunity to deputise Rob Green. Having played just a single game for Gary Monk’s side, we could see the 32-year old former Chelsea man headed for the exit door at Elland Road at the end of the season.
