Transfer Opinion: Why Pochettino Shouldn’t Spend Heavy In Janaury

Share

Tottenham are having a decent season under Mauricio Pochettino and seem to be going from strength to strength. The London club are currently 5th in the Premier League table and could well end up in the Champions League qualification spots come the end of the season.

Spurs are also doing pretty well in Europe and have already qualified for the next round of the Europa League with a game to spare. All this with Harry Kane blowing hot and cold for the club. Spurs also boast the longest unbeaten run of the Premier League season having not lost one game since the start of the season.

With January coming up all eyes would be on the transfer market and whether any team in the Premier League would be looking to sign any players. The January window does give teams the opportunity to fix any problems they might have in the team and there are high hopes for Tottenham who could sign a couple of players and push for a top 4 spot.

Speaking to the media before their Europa League clash against Monaco, Pochettino highlighted that he doesn’t need to sign any players unless it made the squad better.

“It’s not a pressure for me to sign players. We share the responsibility within the club, with the chairman and the head of recruitment.

“If we have the possibility to improve it, be sure, if we can, we will sign the player. We work very hard for that.

“But now is the moment that there is a lot of rumour and people should know we are very happy with the squad we have.”

Tottenham though are looking at one or two players who could improve the squad, one of their biggest needs is a striker who can take some of the pressure from Harry Kane’s broad shoulders but barring that they don’t have to spend money to bolster the squad.

Tottenham are blessed with one of the best academies in the league and that has shown with the promotions of players such as Kane, Mason and Alli in the past. There are also a few players who are on the cusp of the first team and another youngster could well be playing a big role in the end run of the season, Alex Pritchard, another star in the making from Spurs’ academy.

Mauricio Pochettino also has a few players to look forward to, Dembele, N’jie and Son haven’t really played all that many minutes for Spurs this season and with a fixture pile-up inevitable for Premier League sides in the Christmas period, those players, who are quality, will become extremely important for the club.

Bringing in any player in the January window is a gamble that a club takes. They are often cup tied or take more time adjusting to the league, in fact, you will rarely find a winter transfer that has worked out extremely well for a team. Luis Suarez might be an exception but in the same window Andy Carroll was also bought by Liverpool and we all know what happened then.

Tottenham are in a good place, the balance of the squad is good. There are players who are competing for most of the starting places. They have a great academy setup and their manager also knows what he is doing and is taking the club in the right direction. Why try to fix something that isn’t broken? Pochettino could well end up getting Tottenham to the top four and more this season and credit must fall on the management of Spurs, that too with a very little investment when buying big named players.
