Why Tottenham should beat their rivals to sign Marcus Thuram

According to a report in Sun, Premier League giants Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United are after striker Marcus Thuram – son of French World Cup winner Lillian Thuram. The Guingamp star has scored 10 goals in 17 appearances to catch the eyes of some of the big clubs in Europe.

He also netted a winner for his team in a shock French cup win over Paris-Saint Germain last week at Parc-des Princes. The 21-year-old has got rave reviews from everyone around despite his club being at the bottom of Ligue 1 table.

As per the report, the Premier League trio had sent scouts to take a closer look at the player during his game against St-Etienne on Saturday.

Here’s why Tottenham should beat their rivals to sign the striker either this month or in the summer:

Marcus Thuram

Spurs’ apparent need of a striker to support Harry Kane

It is pretty evident that Kane plays almost all the games for Spurs, however, an injury to him now means that Mauricio Pochettino’s men are short. Fernando Llorente is in the squad to deputise for the England captain, but the way he plays and the way Tottenham like to play is contradictory.

Relying only on Kane isn’t the best idea for a team, who are fighting in every competition possible throughout the course of a season. His current absence is a lesson learnt for Spurs.

Generally though, Kane does have a very good fitness level, that keeps him on the pitch for the majority of the games and he also scores goals to justify the inclusion in the team.

But as we witnessed, the 25-year-old has injured his ankle against United and is out until March. With Son Heung-Min also leaving the club to play for his country, Spurs are literally sweating on the options up front. This is where a proper backup striker is needed.

Getting someone like Marcus Thuram would be ideal for them as he can not only play as a striker but also operate on the wing if required. Hence, he can be a support striker to Kane but also be an extra option for the manager in the wide attacking areas.

The 21-year-old has had a terrific season so far and deserves to get scouted by the top English clubs. He possesses the pace to make runs in behind and has a dribble rate of 3.4 per game in the league, which epitomises his strength in dazzling past defenders in a flash.

The key pass rate of 1.1 shows that he is not only a goal-scoring attacker but also focuses on creating chances for other players around. (whoscored.com)

All in all, the Frenchman is a complete forward who can be a great addition to the Spurs squad, irrespective of whether Kane is fit or not. The youngster would also fit into Pochettino’s system.
