Tottenham’s Champions League road map: Here’s how Spurs can make their way out of a tough UCL group

Tottenham are capable of grinding it out of their tough Champions League group

Tottenham Hotspur have so far won all three of their opening games of the season, including a sumptuous 3-0 win against Manchester United. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have looked confident in the early stages and seen determined to claim their first piece of silverware under the manager this season.

The Lilywhites will also be competing in the UEFA Champions League this season and have been drawn in Group B alongside Barcelona, Inter Milan, and PSV Eindhoven. Though Spurs became the first club in the history of the Premier League to not make a single signing in the summer transfer window, this squad is more than capable of taking on the big giants.

Inter Milan

First up, Mauricio Pochettino’s men travel to the Giuseppe Meazza to face Inter Milan, before which they face an electric Liverpool side in the league. Pochettino must ensure he rest at least one or two stars for the Liverpool game as might Jurgen Klopp, given the Reds face a tougher test against Paris Saint-Germain.

Ivan Perisic

Inter have only picked up 1 point in their opening two games, conceding 3 goals. Tottenham are very fluid and cohesive going forward, with Harry Kane breaking his August hoodoo as well. Lucas Moura has looked in fine form and Spurs very much have the upper hand in this one.

Barcelona

Tottenham are fortunate to face Barcelona in the first leg at home, sandwiched between clashes against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City in the Premier League. The Spanish Champions will certainly provide a tough test for the London club.

Lionel Messi

But if Pochettino can come up with at least one win in the two legs against the Catalans, Spurs should be in pole position to qualify. The Lilywhites have looked defensively solid and well-drilled. Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez have all started the season in good form and they are capable of keeping Leo Messi and co. quiet.

PSV Eindhoven

Mark Van Bommel’s side have won all three of their games so far and have conceded just 2 goals in the process. The Dutch outfit are definitely the easiest of the three teams that Tottenham face in the UCL but PSV are capable of surprising anyone.

Unfortunately for Spurs, they face Manchester City right after their away game against PSV. This means it’s absolutely vital that Pochettino picks up at least one win against Barcelona or Inter Milan.

He can then resort to handing a few rests for the game against the Dutch outfit and ensure the squad is fully fit to face the Champions.
