Spurs Opinion: Lilywhites should sign Diogo Jota in the summer

According to the Express, Spurs are interested in signing Diogo Jota from Wolves in the summer, with manager Mauricio Pochettino reportedly keen on bolstering his attacking options.

Jota propelled Wolves to a title-winning season in the Championship last term, netting a career-best 17 goals, and the Portuguese has once again been one of the key driving forces behind Wolves’ remarkable campaign in the Premier League this season.

The 22-year-old has contributed with a total of 7 goals and 5 assists from 28 appearances in all competitions.

Jota’s hat-trick in the 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League has arguably been the highlight of his season so far, while his winner against Man United in the FA Cup quarter-finals can also be regarded as a significant contribution.

Teamed up alongside Raul Jimenez up front, Diogo Jota, with his explosive pace, power and eye for goal, has proven himself to be a wonderful fit for Nuno Espirito Santo’s counter-attacking system.

While Jimenez has been a key presence up front with his hold-up play and aerial ability, Jota has complemented the Mexican very well with his pace, movement, dribbling skills and clinical finishing.

Truth be told, Jota and Jimenez are completely different in their style of play but they have worked very well in tandems to propel Wolves to 7th in the Premier League standings.

Jota has been a tireless worker for Wolves this season, showing a lot of energy and stamina to drop deep and get involved in the build-up play, whilst also managing to win back possession with his pressing off the ball.

Noted for his pace, flair, agility and sharpness, Jota is a flamboyant attacker who also uses his strength and raw power to cut inside where he often fancies a shot on goal with his preferred right foot.

He is still 22 and his consistency will need to improve but one should take nothing away from him after making a big impact in his first season in the Premier League.

To put things into perspective, Spurs should be desperate to do some business in the summer after failing to sign a single new player for two transfer windows.

While a replacement for Mousa Dembele in central midfield remains a priority for Pochettino, the manager should also look to bring in a versatile and dynamic attacker as a backup for the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son up front.

Kane and Son have enjoyed another wonderful season in the Premier League this term but Spurs will need to make a decision on the futures of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen.

Llorente failed to impress during Kane’s injury absence while Janssen hasn’t played for ages. Pochettino has relied on Lucas Moura to spearhead the attack at times but the Brazilian, though impressive at times, hasn’t been consistent enough and has faded away in recent weeks.

Erik Lamela is another attacker who has delivered the goods when called upon but just hasn’t played often enough to be regarded as a first-team regular.

Jota, on the other hand, would be a better back up for the likes of Kane and Son as compared to Lucas Moura. Just like the Brazilian, Jota also has lightning pace and good dribbling skills but he offers a bit more in terms of movement off the ball, work rate and composure in front of goal.

Spurs need more depth in their squad to end their long drought of silverware and the acquisition of Jota would be a step in the right direction for the Lilywhites.
