According to a report from Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Tottenham Hotspur are keen to acquire the services of Inter Milan’s Matias Vecino. The Uruguayan has been impressive for the Serie A giants so far this campaign and has caught the attention of Mauricio Pochettino, who is aiming to bring him to White Hart Lane in the summer.
Tottenham have a void to fill in central midfield due to the departure of Belgian powerhouse Mousa Dembele in January. Vecino could fit in perfectly in Pochettino’s 4-3-3 or 3-4-2-1 formations.
Vecino has played all across the central midfield for Inter so far this season and is more than capable of adapting to different roles when the game demands it.
The 27-year-old has been occasionally poor this season but that is mainly due to Luciano Spaletti’s 4-2-3-1, which has left Vecino isolated at the centre of the park.
However, Vecino would thrive in Tottenham’s high pressing style and his physical prowess will help him settle into the Premier League with considerable ease.
The Uruguayan has 2 goals and 3 assists so far this season, mainly playing in a deeper role. Under Pochettino, he can be highly effective in an advanced role and has the ability to cause serious damage to the opposition.
Vecino, when played in a number 8 role, is a ball carrier. His driving runs through the centre of the midfield into the final third is extremely difficult to stop. Thanks to his tremendous technical ability on the ball, he is rarely ever dispossessed.
The 27-year-old’s dribbling skills are phenomenal and despite not having too many tricks under his belt, he has the ability to get out of tight spaces with a clever drop of the shoulder.
Vecino uses his body to magnificent effect when on the ball to shrug off his markers and is also excellent in his hold-up play.
Defensively, Vecino is relentless and like most Uruguayan players, he is always willing to put his body on the line for the sake of the team. His positioning and awareness of free space are extremely impressive and his ability to sense danger makes him a valuable asset.
In his 16 starts in the Serie A this campaign, Vecino has successfully won 1.6 aerial duels and averages 1.5 tackles per game. The Uruguayan also boasts of an impressive 82% passing accuracy which will only get better under a manager like Pochettino whose system suits Vecino. (WhoScored)
