Moussa Sissoko deserves a second chance after his surge in form this season

Tottenham Hotspur were unable to make the most of their chances against Manchester City as the club succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the Wembley Stadium. Spurs have made the best start to their Premier League campaign this term but it hasn’t been all beds and roses for the London club.

Pochettino failed to make a single transfer in the summer with the lack of depth and quality effectively taking a major toll on them. Spurs tend to ease past mediocre sides but look a completely different team when they come up against the giants.

One man who has certainly upped his performances this season and over the last few weeks is French midfielder Moussa Sissoko. Since making the move to Tottenham in 2016, the 29-year-old’s spell was largely blighted by injuries and inconsistent performances.

Sissoko barely looked the player that arrived from Newcastle United and started to get worse during the initial period. He was labelled as one of the worst signings by Pochettino but has managed to make amends this season.

The Frenchman now looks determined and motivated to change the impression he has created. One of his best performances came against West Ham United last weekend when the former Newcastle star bossed in the middle of the park while also picking up the assist for Lamela’s winning goal. Sissoko averaged a pass success rate of 94.4%, which was the highest of any Tottenham player on the night. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

When many chalked him off as a lazy and demotivated figure, Sissoko has also built on his work rate as he surges up and down the field. The 29-year-old is now more than willing to track back and help out the defence. He then picks the ball up from deep areas before marauding up front to support the attack.

Though he still requires a lot more fine-tuning to his game, Sissoko has shown that he is capable of breaking boundaries. When a number of players succumbed to injuries and Spurs were in dire need of some urgency, Sissoko has stepped up and made a name for himself.

Mauricio Pochettino must now definitely hand him a regular role in the squad and moreover a second chance to justify his transfer. The Frenchman has taken big strides this season after overcoming an injury-ravaged period. After his recent performances, he certainly deserves more game time at the club.
