Why Should Tottenham recall Josh Onomah from his loan spell

According to a report in the Star, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that the club is contemplating over the possibility of bringing Josh Onomah back from his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

The England U21 international, who joined the Owls on a season-long loan deal back in August, is currently back at his parent club receiving treatment on his hamstring injury. He suffered that injury during Wednesday’s Boxing Day win over Middlesbrough, and won’t be back until February.

Onomah played for current Owls boss Steve Bruce last season when the duo was at Aston Villa. The midfielder has made 11 appearances for the Owls this season, supplying three assists in the process.

Pochettino has said that they are thinking about the plausibility of bringing him back, and here’s why Spurs should take their player back for the rest of this season:

Spurs are short on quality numbers in the midfield

Tottenham are in a situation where another injury would expose their academy squad to the Premier League. With Victor Wanyama injured, Mousa Dembele leaving the club to move to China and Moussa Sissoko injured for a while, they are short on options in the midfield. Eric Dier was back against Fulham, which should be considered as a relief.

These all setbacks in addition to the absence of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and possibly, Dele Alli. In short, Spurs are in trouble. Hence, having a player of Onomah’s versatility would be a welcome sight.

The 21-year-old can operate as an attacking midfielder or as one of the wide midfielders. He has the qualities to get into the line-up and make the difference. His passing in the tight areas and the vision to be accurate with them is exceptional.

His dribbling isn’t bad either and when it comes to playing as a number 10 behind the striker and trying to create space for a shot or a key pass towards the goal, he is impressive.

For a young player, Onomah has played enough football at a decent level to understand a player’s role without possession. Thus, he would be nothing but a fantastic addition to the Tottenham squad for the rest of this season.
