According to a report in the Mirror, Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea have joined the race to sign Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Eagles are aware of the fact that the youngster will be hot property come the summer transfer window, with the above-mentioned clubs also in the list of potential destinations.
The 21-year-old has been one of Palace’s standout performers ever since he was handed a debut by Roy Hodgson back in February last year.
A few months ago, even defending champions Manchester City were keeping close tabs on the player, who is earning rave reviews from all over the country.
Here’s why United should beat Chelsea and other rivals to sign the England U21 international:
Manchester United have three options for the right-back slot currently. However, two of them won’t be ideal assets come next season – Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.
It is because Valencia is expected to leave the club and Young is more of a filler in that position, partly because new signing Diogo Dalot hasn’t yet settled at the club.
Hence, it is imperative from the club’s point of view that they sign a new right-back in the summer. They have struggled defensively this season, having already shipped in 33 goals from 23 league games. Thus, someone like Wan-Bissaka would stabilise the right-back spot, which would help them in conceding fewer goals next season.
The 21-year-old doesn’t shy away from getting forward and helping out the attacks, however, he knows that his primary job is to keep the opposition at bay. The tackle and interception rate of 3.7 and 2.4 per game respectively clearly depicts that he is one of the best when it comes to one-vs-one defending in the wide areas.
The Englishman moves forward and puts in some decent crosses as well. His dribbling rate of 1.9 further epitomises his boldness to take on the defender when on the ball. All in all, at such a tender age, Wan-Bissaka has all the makings of a world-class full-back. (stats – whoscored.com)
Cut to the situation at Chelsea, and they have Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back. The Spaniard also signed a new contract recently to further stamp his slot in the team.
Therefore, if we juxtapose the circumstance of both clubs, United’s need for a right-back is more apparent than Chelsea, which means they must beat the Blues to land Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
