Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal? Who Should Thomas Lemar Join This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the many clubs in England who are busily trying to add some firepower to their attack and Mauricio Pochettino’s specific recruitment model makes it tougher for Spurs to find the right man for their squad this summer. But one player they are now extensively looking at is AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar.

The French winger was in excellent form for the French side last season but has constantly been linked with an exit. He is reportedly a top transfer target for Arsene Wenger at the Emirates and it looks like the two North London clubs will now fight it out for Lemar’s signature this summer.

The Gunners are set to lose their star winger Alexis Sanchez, who is yet to put pen to paper, with reports even suggesting that he has rejected a new £300,000 a week deal with the club. Arsenal have signed French striker Alexandre Lacazette but he only covers a glaring hole that was already present in the squad and is by no means a replacement for the Chilean winger in the first team next season.

Sanchez was the creator in chief for the Gunners last season and though Lacazette and Ozil will keep them as an exciting unit in the attack, they will need a genuine winger who can add width to the attack and Lemar seems like the perfect fit.

At just 21, the versatile winger fashioned 14 goals and 14 assists for club and country in more than 50 games across all competitions last season, including 2 goals and 4 assists in the Champions League. He is experienced at the highest level and is ready for the next step but he has a huge conundrum, with two of the finest man managers in Europe, looking to secure his services this summer.

Heung-Min Son was a beast last season and was remarkable. Eric Lamela still remains a quality player and if he remains injury-free next season, he would help Tottenham’s cause. Pochettino’s style of play doesn’t really have an out and out winger and technically speaking, he doesn’t actually play with an orthodox winger in his team. This is where Lemar fits in. He is someone who can play as a floater that Pochettino wants his creators to play as. Though he is less experienced, he is an exceptional talent and could turn into a beast alongside the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Kane, making Tottenham’s one of the finest attacks in the country.

Wenger will take his time to adjust to the needs of the new season and having Theo Walcott and Thomas Lemar as wingers is not too bad, even if he ends up losing Sanchez. With the likes of Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Oxlade Chamberlain in the team, and with Wenger playing a 3-4-2-1, Lemar doesn’t really fit in at Arsenal.

Lemar will be a genuine starter under Pochettino and Tottenham’s game play would suit him well. This is probably where he should move this summer.
