English news outlet Sun has reported that Argentine Erik Lamela heads Tottenham’s list of players that will be sold next summer. The 27-year-old has been consistently in and out of the team, since joining the club from AS Roma a little over six years ago.
Despite that and injury issues, the Argentine has played well over 150 games for the club. A talented player on his day, Erik Lamela joined Tottenham from AS Roma, after the North London side had sold Gareth Bale.
In fact, he arrived for £25.8m alongside Christian Eriksen, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, and a few others, as the club looked to replace Bale with multiple players. While the idea was good in theory, the execution wasn’t, with only Eriksen and Lamela still at the club.
Unlike Eriksen, Lamela has been very inconsistent. Injuries and various other issues saw him miss the majority of the 2016/17 season. He also played just 17 games in his first season in England.
The 27-year-old has often been used as a winger. But with Mauricio Pochettino playing overlapping full-backs, Lamela’s position on the field is more like a number 10’s. That’s exactly why the club shouldn’t sell him, with the Argentinian finally showing his potential this season.
So far in 31 appearances, the 27-year-old has produced nine goals, averaged 1.1 key passes, 1.1 dribbles and 1 tackle per game. Not only that, his pass completion has been an average of 83% per game, which is higher than Ben Davies, Dele Alli, and even Christian Eriksen.
It shows how confident and comfortable Erik Lamela is with the ball and more importantly, how he could move even deeper in the near future. The 27-year-old has always been a creative player, putting his guile and tenacity to great use.
