Bristol City opinion – Robins interested in Joe Lumley – good move?

According to a report in Lancashire Live, Bristol City will be looking to sign QPR goalkeeper Joe Lumley in the summer transfer-window.

Lee Johnson’s men are looking to add a stopper to their side, who can take the number one position, with the potential departure of Frank Fielding looking likely. The latter’s contract expires at the end of this season and no extension has been agreed upon (h/t Lancashire Live).

Moreover, we have seen Max O’Leary taking the gloves, but he is still very young at the moment. Niki Maenpaa’s contract also expires in the summer.

Hence, it makes sense that the Robins are looking for a new keeper in the upcoming transfer window.

Joe Lumley

Here’s why signing Joe Lumley would be a step in the right direction:

Lumley could slot in as the number one

Joe Lumley has risen through the ranks in English football. He started his youth career for QPR U18s, before moving to Accrington on loan. After that, he made several loan moves away from Loftus Road and gained sufficient experience to finally be their number one keeper this season.

He has kept 15 clean sheets in 41 appearances in all competitions, shipping in 54 goals, which is decent for a lower mid-table team in the Championship.

In terms of his attributes, Lumley’s height (190cm) allows him to cover a large portion of the goal when diving. Furthermore, he has great reflexes from both short and long distances.

The 24-year-old’s positioning was a cause of concern during his loan spells. But he has improved on that and it is evident this season. The distribution needs improvement in the coming years.

Conclusion

All in all, at 24, Lumley has a long footballing career ahead of him. He is a quality shot-stopper who has the potential to become more lethal in the coming seasons. Hence, Bristol City would be right to sign him and hand him the number one role.
