Why Tottenham shouldn’t hold on to Christian Eriksen?

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer after admitting that he is looking for new challenges away from North London. (h/t The Guardian)

A recent report from Telegraph has stated that Atletico Madrid remain in the hunt for the Danish playmaker, adding that Spurs have held talks with the La Liga side for the sale of the player.

Eriksen, 27, has been a staple for the North London side ever since he made his switch from Ajax in 2013.

Over the course, the Dane never looked back as he put up his heart out in the seasons that followed. In the 2018/19 campaign, even though Pochettino carried a lop-sided unit, Eriksen turned out as a catalyst and helped his side reach the UCL finals.

In the process, he racked up 10 goals and 17 assists and proved to be a standout than of his peers in the league.

Eriksen is no more a concern for Spurs

Whilst it remains difficult for Pochettino to find someone as good as the Danish skipper, Giovani Lo Celso, who has completed his move to Spurs (h/t The Guardian), is more or less similar to the star.

The 23-year-old had a breakthrough season with Real Betis the last term, racking up a total of 16 goals and 6 assists – great returns for a player whose side eventually ended 10th in the table.

Statistically, he averaged 1 key pass, 2 dribbles and 4 shots per game, making him an upgrade to Eriksen. The former PSG man’s versatility is another fact to be savoured by his compatriot Pochettino, who, in return, can help him become one of the most recognizable midfielders.

Final verdict

Spurs are having the best time in the transfer window and losing out a key player like Eriksen won’t do much harm, as they are set to receive the services of Lo Celso, who can go from strength-to-strength in no time.
