Tottenham letting go of their talented 20-year-old could come back to bite them later in the season

Why Mauricio Pochettino should keep hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers

After a rather quiet transfer season where tying Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min down to new contracts were the only significant activities, Tottenham now have the opportunity to only offload players from their squad.

The Mirror claims that Alderweireld is wanted at the Allianz Arena as Bayern Munich are looking to find a replacement for Jerome Boateng should the German leave for Paris Saint-Germain.

The latest transfer news has come in the form of 20-year-old centre-back, Cameron Carter-Vickers. As the Sun puts it down, Mauricio Pochettino does not have any intention of involving the youngster in his plans and the player has been linked with a loan move to Swansea City.

With Alderweireld’s future being a question mark, it would be a questionable decision by the manager to loan out one of the squad’s most promising prospects.

Despite having plenty of options in the attacking third, Spurs do not have too many choices for the centre-back position. Belgian duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have been a key part of the Lilywhites’ defence, along with Davinson Sanchez.

Alderweireld did not play any part in the opening league fixture against Newcastle United but he started the second game against Fulham which Spurs won 3-1.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Cameron Carter-Vickers made his first appearance for Tottenham in the Football League Cup in 2016 but the youngster is yet to make his Premier League debut. The 20-year-old American international deserves to be a part of the manager’s plans for the current season since the Londoners are short of options at the back.

Even if Alderweireld does not leave in the current transfer window, the possibility remains that the Belgian might eventually depart in January. Looking at it from a different angle, Alderweireld has had lots of issues with his fitness in the previous season and it remains to be seen how his body copes with the demanding nature of the Premier League.

It would not be the wisest move to loan out Carter-Vickers, considering the fact that Spurs must perform well on multiple fronts. At the tender age of 20, the youngster may not boast composure of the highest level but he has shown significant development in terms of his positioning and marking.

Eric Dier, who has started both games in central midfield, is more than capable of playing as a centre-back but Pochettino should continue deploying him in the middle of the park as Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are pront to picking up injuries.

Mauricio Pochettino

Things have looked good for Tottenham so far but it would be hard to imagine their backline without Vertonghen or Alderweireld. If Alderweireld leaves or one of them gets sidelined due to an injury, it would be for the club to fill the void.

Not arguing the fact that Carter-Vickers still has a long way to go, he could be a valuable asset in terms of boosting squad depth in the absence of Sanchez, Alderweireld or Vertonghen.

Having said that, Pochettino should give this move a second thought as it might prove to be risky as the season wears on.
