Why Tottenham Hotspur should rekindle interest in Tagliafico

Out of all the big-six sides in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur have perhaps looked the shakiest. They haven’t played with any conviction so far and the loss to Newcastle at home last weekend really summed it all up.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side seems to really lack the creativity with Christian Eriksen not featuring much in the line-up. They are also clearly missing the creativity provided by Kieran Trippier. Danny Rose isn’t getting any younger and is on the final year of his contract as well.

One player Spurs were interested in the summer was Argentinian international and current Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico.

The full-back, along with many of his Ajax teammates, had a breakthrough season in the Champions League. Last season, he bagged 6 goals and 6 assists in all competitions and Pochettino could really use someone with his skill set right now.

They’re finding it hard to break teams down that keep a low block and Pochettino is known to task his full-backs with providing an attacking threat from the wide areas.

Spurs don’t’ have any natural wide players, as the likes of Son and Lucas Moura often cut inside. Without wide players, it becomes very difficult to stretch the field and Spurs will struggle this season without it.

Tagliafico is still fairly young at 26 and that would allow him to settle in quite easily to the new surroundings. Spurs also have quite a few former Ajax players in their current side and hence, the footballing culture will not be too dissimilar to what he’s used to.

Spurs face bitter rivals Arsenal this weekend with a visit to the Emirates on the cards. This is a massive game for both sides but Pochettino’s men will go into this game as the side under pressure.

It’s the first time that they’ve been this unsettled under Mauricio Pochettino but that could be rectified by signing Tagliafico in the January window.
