Why Tottenham must rival Everton and Wolves to sign Marcos Rojo

According to a report from the Metro, Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is wanted by Everton in January.

The 28-year-old Argentine has not played for the first-team this season and manager Jose Mourinho is willing to let the defender go in order to raise funds for a new centre-back in January.

Marcos Rojo only signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United in May but he’s surplus to requirements and looks ripe for the chop after constantly struggling with various injury problems.

And as per the report, the Red Devils will let the Argentine defender leave for around £18m but Everton could face competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, Tottenham Hotspur should rival the likes of Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers for Rojo’s signature.

Tottenham Hotspur may have enjoyed the best start to a Premier League campaign but they haven’t been utterly convincing, defensively and offensively as well. Mauricio Pochettino has a squad filled with talented attacking players but when it comes to the defence department, he has quality but lacks depth.

The injury to defensive lynchpin Jan Vertonghen has led to chaos at the back for Spurs, with neither Davinson Sanchez nor Juan Foyth looking composed alongside Toby Alderweireld.

Foyth has put in a couple of impressive performances this season but he was culpable for giving away two penalties in the nervy 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Davinson Sanchez, on the other hand, has looked shaky and erratic with his passing, which has resulted in Alderweireld shouldering the majority of the defensive responsibilities. With Vertonghen ageing and with him expected to be out until December with a hamstring injury, it won’t be the worst of ideas to sign a new central defender in January.

That being said, Spurs must splash the cash on Marcos Rojo in the winter transfer window. Since joining United from Sporting Lisbon back in 2014, Rojo’s Old Trafford career has been plagued by injuries that haven’t allowed him to reach his potential.

Now at 28, the Argentina international will be entering the peak years of his career but he’s out of favour under Jose Mourinho. Injuries have certainly hampered Rojo’s time in the Premier League but when fit, he is a powerful defender to come up against. He is a versatile customer who could fit Pochettino’s system perfectly.

Hence, the experienced Rojo would be an excellent addition to Tottenham for a bargain price, and Daniel Levy must now find the cash to strengthen his club’s backline in January.
