Should Tottenham Fans Be Worried About Their €22.7 Million New Signing?

Share

There was a lot of hype and excitement surrounding what was supposed to be the biggest signing for Tottenham Hotspur in the past few months since the club made official that they convinced the dutch striker Vincent Janssen to join them this season to try and make a run in the English Premier League and why not? The UEFA Champions League.

The Dutch was supposed to be an ally for Harry Kane, who often struggles to get things going if he wakes up from the wrong side of the bed; and Janssen could help him take some pressure off his shoulders as the lone option in the top of the field for the Yids.

Janssen’s physical characteristics made him the perfect fit to succeed in the Premier League, as the dutch is tall enough, strong enough and fast enough to make it in a physical yet fast paced league where the best defensive players in the world collide.

Through the first games of the season, Janssen didn’t make much of an impact, but that wasn’t something to be worried about; since the prolific forward saw most of his minutes in the last periods of the matches, coming from the bench to replace Harry Kane.

However, what Janssen showed while he was on the field was enough to think that the Spurs had won the big prize with the 22-year-old, getting open looks for him and his teammates, dribbling past defenders at will and constantly moving without the ball around the enemy’s box.

That’s why nobody was hugely concerned when Harry Kane fell with an ankle injury that could sideline him for a couple of months, as everybody thought that Janssen would start to thrive in Pochettino’s scheme and would be scoring goals at will.

Nevertheless, Vincent’s lack of scoring even despite owning a starting spot a couple of games due to Kane’s injury, along with his poor performances have really concerned the Spurs fanbase and ownership, as the dutch has only scored once in 12 appearances and that score came from the penalty spot in a match where Christian Eriksen sacrificed a hat trick in order to get his teammate going with an easy score, but that didn’t seem to change Janssen’s performance either.

However, we tend to think that is really early to give up on this young guy, who arrived at White Hart Lane after being the Eredivisie’s top scorer at only 21 years old and before you put him in the same pile as other one hit wonders as Memphis Depay, let’s take a look at an interesting fact

During his top scorer year, the dutch striker actually averaged 1.2 goals per game during the second half of the season, netting 21 goals in the last 17 games of the year after scoring only 6 in the first half of the campaign.

Given the fact that Harry Kane is going to remain the starting forward for Pochettino’s time, at least for the foreseeable future, there’s no need to force anything with Janssen or lose faith in him, as the young guy has a lot of talent and years to come to prove that he was worth the 22m invested in acquiring his services.
