Manchester United beat Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday at Wembley to reach the FA Cup final. Dele Alli put Mauricio Pochettino’s side ahead in the 11th minute but Alexis Sanchez equalised in the 24th minute, heading acrobatically from a Paul Pogba cross.
Pogba’s crisp hit worried Vorm in the Tottenham goal seconds before Spurs hit the post through Eric Dier in first-half stoppage time.
After the break, both sides approached the game with high intensity but United continued to ask serious questions and took the lead when Ander Herrera arrived from nowhere to apply the finishing touch to a flowing counter-attack involving Sanchez, Lukaku and Lingard.
Jose Mourinho’s side will play Chelsea or Southampton, who play in the second semi-final on Sunday.
The Spaniard couldn’t do anything about Dele Alli’s opener and was rooted on the spot for Eric Dier’s deflected effort that hit the post before half-time.
Valencia was caught out of position on a number of occasions as Son Heung-min gave him a torrid time. He looked uncomfortable throughout the game and came off injured.
Smalling was good if not spectacular. He kept Harry Kane quiet and defended ruggedly.
Jones was really solid at the back, executing an all-important block on Alli at 1-0. After the break, he grew much more into the game and helped United reach the FA Cup final.
He was caught out of position for Alli’s goal as he failed to mark Eriksen. However, Young improved after the break.
Matic was hardly seen in the first 15-20 minutes but after United equalised, he started influencing the game. Offered a good shield to United’s defence.
A typical Herrera performance — aggressive, strong and diligent in midfield. Slotted the ball well past Vorm to win the game for United.
Pogba played a delightful cross that picked out Sanchez for the equaliser. The Frenchman was good on the ball, showed a lot of energy and helped his team drive forward.
Lingard showed plenty of energy and zest, covering a lot of ground that kept Spurs’ player on their toes. He came off to a rapturous applause.
Sanchez had a slow start to the game but picked up the rhythm after equalising with a fantastic header. The Chilean was full of running, created a lot of chances, showed creativity and was in the thick of the action for United’s winner. This was undoubtedly Sanchez’s best performance in a United shirt.
Lukaku worked his socks off but to very little effect. He played a fantastic through ball to Rashford on the counter but the Englishman missed the golden opportunity to put United 3-1 up.
He was booked for diving before wasting a golden opportunity.
