Top 5 U-21 European Footballers This Season
Reading about the newest talent in then footballing world has changed over the years. A couple of decades ago, a 25-year-old footballer was still considered ‘young’ and had time to develop and grow but with the growth of football and ‘wonder kids’ taking the world by storm, everything that we know about the youth system at clubs has changed.
Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar are some players who found their feet even before they were the legal drinking age in certain countries and with youngsters in our mind, we list out the best five talents who are under the age of 21 and have performed admirably this season in their respective teams.
5. Thomas Lemar
Monaco might be a distant second to PSG in the Ligue 1 standings and despite selling Anthony Martial at the start of this season, they still have a player who has been turning heads with his impressive performance in midfield for the Principality. Thomas Lemar is only 20-years-old but already has provided three man-of-the-match performances for the club and has four goals and two assists to his name this season.
4. Anthony Martial
It might have been a brisk start to his career at United and then a bit of a lull but Anthony Martial proved once again why he is such a highly rated player when he scored a wonderful goal against Stoke City. The Manchester United forward might still be learning the ropes at the club but if he continues growing at this rate, he would probably end up costing United a bunch in the near future as they still have to pay Monaco for the transfer.
3. Hakan Calhanoglu
His name might be a tongue twister for most but the one thing he can twist is the ball in the air. Hakan has been exceptional ever since he signed for Leverkusen and his dead ball delivery is brilliant to boot. At only 20-years-old he has a bright future not only in the Bundesliga but also for the Turkish national side. Playing in an attacking role, he has a couple of goals to his name this season and also four assists to his name.
2. Adrien Rabiot
There probably will be a tug of war in the summer when a host of clubs battle with PSG for the services of the excellent French defensive midfielder. Rabiot has been one of the more impressive players in the heart of midfield for PSG this season but he has not started as many games as he would have liked and certainly will be a player that every team wants.
1. Dele Alli
The Tottenham star has really shot up to the big time under Mauricio Pochettino. Everyone did know that he was a talented individual but after a few good games this season; he has become a regular mainstay in the first team. At only 19-years-old, Alli already has seven goals to his name this season and has provided four assists. He should be a sure shot member for the coming up Euros.
