Top 5 Manchester United Flop Signings After SAF Era: Featuring A Fifth Most Expensive Player Of All Time

Share

Manchester United, one of the powerhouses in Europe has lost its era and has lost its magic in the recent era. After the retirement of Sir Alex, United saw its downfall. Almost every player Ferguson signed left the club as a star. He made them what they are. But, the club is nowhere near their standards these days and players are nowhere near at their best.

Arrival of Louis Van Gaal bought some hope to crowd and his signings made United believe that they can challenge for the title this year. Well, nothing of that happened and the fans were left disappointed. This year, United had their chance to show the magic in the Champions League but, the team was knocked out in the group stages and eventually was knocked out of Europa League through their rivals Liverpool.

Here I will be stating the worst 5 signings United made after the tenure of Alex Ferguson-

Marouane Fellaini-

No doubt about him. He has been the worst Manchester United player since his arrival. Had a great career at Everton where he helped his side to finish their campaign at 5th position on his very first season. Worked great under Moyes at Everton but, as Moyes brought him at Manchester, he was nowhere near to his previous form. Was not able to score a single goal that season for the team and became the enemy number one for the fans.

Arrival of Van Gaal saw an inclination in his form but the injuries ruined it and eventually he was not able to give the performance fans expected. He was played as a striker many times in the league to find the goal but he failed to deliver any great result for the side.

His career as a United player might come to an end as he has not matched the performance. He has been constantly poor on the ball, shoots with no accuracy and has no aim whenever he is on the ball. He had all the experience in the world to play in the premier league but god knows what happened and his form is touching rock bottom every time he plays.

Nowadays, he  is criticized for his rough pushing and flying elbows. Off the ball, he is very awkward and keeps fouling the players. He has become more of a Wrestler than a player.

Di Maria-

What a massive signing it was. Arrived Manchester on 26 August 2014 signing a 5 year deal with the club and became the most expensive player for Manchester United and also the fifth most expensive transfer of all time. Every United fan would have thought that this is their time. Di Maria gave a man of the match performance in his Champions League Final’s game with Real Madrid and for sure, the expectations were sky high. He was given the legendary number 7 T-shirt as well.

Had a great start to his United career and scored on his home debut through a free kick, provided an assist to Juan Mata and eventually became the man of the match. He missed the mid-season for the club due to his injury. Soon after his return, Van Gaal deployed the Argentine at the center forward which was the most unusual position for the player. Coming to an end of the season, he saw decline in form and his relationship with the manager. He was judged by the journalist to be the worst signing of the year. Di Maria failed to show his recaps at Old Trafford and had a frustrating time as well.

Eventually, at the end of the season, he decided to leave the club for the French outfit Paris Saint-Germain and even after that, he was booed and was criticized by the fans of Manchester.

Marcos Rojo-

After his difficult start to the first season, he is still struggling to set a firm hand in the league. Rojo, was played as a center back and as a left back by the Manager Louis Van Gaal. Just after his arrival, he missed the games due to home-sickness. He is having an injury-full career at Old Trafford. In the recent times, the games he played were the worst defensive games United ever played.

He enjoyed most of his current season’s time at sideline due to injuries.

Recently in an interview, he showed his desire to return to his hometown where he started his career. Well, if he departs, United will surely not struggle at any position. The player didn’t had a great time to remember at the club and was not up to the ‘United’s Level’ as well.

Radamel Falcao-

The Columbian joined Manchester United on 1 September 2014 on loan from Monaco. Another Ray of Hope for United but proved to be a failure at the club. At the time of joining, Falcao said that he would do everything to settle down at the club and will become the club’s legend. Well, neither he settled down at the club nor he became the legend.

Falcao is one of those players whose career has been hit by a long-term injury. The player missed the 2014 world cup due to a severe ACL injury on January 2014. It took him 7 months to return from the injury and then started a decline in the El Tigre’s career. As he was unable to put any mark in the club, he was named as the worst signing of the season.

Scored just 4 goals for United and had 4 assists. The club had the option to buy the player after his loan spell but, he was released back to Monaco and currently is enjoying his time sitting on the bench of Stamford Bridge.

Memphis Depay-

After a sensational campaign with PSV in Netherlands, Manchester United bought this player-maker on 7 May 2015. Depay was given the iconic number 7 shirt, previously worn by club legends. He had a pretty start to his United career but was eventually dropped of the squad due to his poor run of form. Premier League is tough, Players are not allowed too much space here and that was the thing Memphis never thought. No offence but, Dutch league is too easy if compared to Premier League.

As he arrived, fans though that, they have found their new ‘Ronaldo’ who can end their miserable run of form.

In his 24 appearances for the club, he scored just 2 goals in the league and that is nowhere near Ronaldo’s standards I guess. Has the shooting accuracy of 47% and this is the worst stat by any mean. Memphis has the 7th short worst conversion rate in the premier league this season and that is 5.9%. A top scorer last season and a super flop this season. The Dutchman’s failed to settle at Old Trafford and have also failed to prove his price tag of £25million. Depay was supposed to be the saviour for United who could end their poor run of form but instead, he added his own misery and became one the worst signings in this season’s premier league.
