In the second round up of the best Premier League players from this season, we provide five players who have been excellent for their clubs. The Premier League has been complete madness so far and some of the players in this list might not have been on your minds when the season started, but their ability to hit top form cannot be second guessed. Thanks to stats from Squawka.com, we provide the next set and hopefully they can continue this great form till the end of the season.
It would be a travesty is any list would be without the star striker from Leicester. Vardy might have been an unknown attacker in the league but his record breaking goal scoring run has seen his name etched in Premier League history.
Vardy currently has 14 league goals to his name and is the leading goal scorer in the Premier League at the moment. If he continues scoring at this rate, he could well end up breaking a few records and getting Leicester into Europe, who would have thought of that at the start of the season.
2. Romelu Lukaku
While Jamie Vardy’s run of scoring in consecutive games might have come to an end, Romelu Lukaku has gotten his scoring boots on and now has scored in seven straight games for Everton. He became one of the fastest scorers to hit the 50 goal mark in the Premier League.
There were doubts about his ability to perform at the top level, but this season has been a different story for the 22-year-old as he has 12 league goals to his name and 15 from 20 games in all competitions.
3. Jan Vertonghen
The 28-year-old has slowly become one of the most reliable defenders in the league and certainly is the main stay in the heart of the Tottenham defence. The Belgian has 44 interceptions to his name from 16 games, 10 blocked shots and 112 clearances.
Vertonghen can only get better with the season progressing, his understanding with Toby Alderweireld has been one of the highlights of the season for Tottenham and the duo could well be serving a few Belgian delights come the end of the season.
4. Chris Smalling
Louis van Gaal might be having a hard time getting the United faithful on his side, but he has been able to get at least one player to perform this season. Chris Smalling has been one of the best players in the league this season and is responsible for United having such a stingy defence.
The English defender has seen his stock slowly rise and a new contract at the start of the season has only provided him with more vigour to perform better this season and nail a starting place in the Manchester United and England team.
5. Toby Alderweireld
The other Tottenham defender has also been in excellent form this season and surely deserves to be listed here. Alderweireld didn’t do all that great during his first season in the Premier League with Southampton, but he has picked up his performances under Mauricio Pochettino.
Toby has 125 clearances to his name and the 26-year-old has been the perfect partner for fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Tottenham defence. He has almost outshone his partner in defence and this season could well get better for Pochettino and Tottenham as they chase a top-four place.
