Time To Let Go: Arsenal Should Sell These 3 Stars In The Coming Season

Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world that bring about development in young, talented footballers and because of the impatience of the developed players to wait for the team to get at its best, more often than not we have seen Arsenal being forced to sell their fully-developed stars to big name clubs. But again, the team also has a few players who have been inconsistent or are not contributing anything. Various reasons are there for players who have been duds at the Emirates, and to be honest, there aren’t too many players the Gunners must sell. But here is a list of three players that must leave the FA Cup Champions.

Abou Diaby

Diaby is as injury prone as it gets. He barely plays any match because of his delicate legs, despite his huge frame. Diaby has regularly torn his ligaments, broken his bone etc., ruling him out for a vast majority of the season. Because of his injuries, Diaby has never had any time to get himself going into some good form whenever he was called upon.

When fully fit, Diaby is a good player and can perform important roles for the Gunners as boss Arsene Wenger gets a good chance to rotate between him and other midfielders. But the Frenchman’s regular injuries means that he does absolutely nothing for the team apart from being on the treatment table. It is time for the Gunners to let go of the emotional attachment with the player and release him or sell him as everybody admits that Diaby has lost the powerful legs that he once had. It can save the club some good money spent on his salary.

Thomas Vermaelen

The Captain of Arsenal was more of a reserve player. The Belgian endured a difficult season in the club as he lost his position to the more consistent centre back Laurent Koscielny. Vermaelen lost his place more because of his error prone defending as well as his tendency to pick up niggling injuries that de-stabilize the back four time and again because of his coming in and out of the team.

Thomas Vermaelen is still among the fray of top defenders and could fetch a decent price if sold to a club that actually need him more on a regular basis and would also not have as lofty aspirations as Arsenal in the coming season. Vermaelen would possibly look for a move to some other league, which could possibly suit his injury prone nature that the physically demanding Premier League rejects.

Mikel Arteta

Arteta is a very gifted passer of the ball and has good technique. He has many playmaking attributes, but in Arsenal, he plays a role which he isn’t doing enough justice to. The deep midfield role he plays for the Gunners demands him to be defensively capable as well. While Arteta is a good interceptor of the opposition’s pass, he is rather easily run over by the strong opposition’s central midfielders. Add to it the Spaniard’s inability to tackle or track back fast enough, which has often let the team down at crucial moments in the match. Arteta needs a conventional defensive midfielder next to him to have the license to dictate play from the central midfield.

Arsenal are surely getting a top class defensive midfielder if they want to make significant progress in their Premier League position and status, but sadly the new purchase would not be meant to play next to the Spaniard. There are two young blooded players in Wilshere and Ramsey, who can do more than what Arteta can do with his advancing age. Both these players are known to be good work horses for the team as well, and with Ramsey bagging the club’s Player of The Year award while Wilshere’s goal getting the Goal of the Season award in the league, there can be no doubt about the development of the Englishman Wilshere and the Welshman Ramsey and to ensure these two players sufficient time on the pitch, Wenger would have to sacrifice Mikel Arteta.
