Three Reasons Why Manchester United Should Splash £60m For This Midfield Beast

Share

Arguably Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest mistake was not someone he bought, but someone he let go of. After battling ever so hard, to get his hands on the prodigiously gifted Paul Pogba, the Scot let him go in 2012. Ever since his departure the Frenchman has developed into one of the finest central midfielders in Europe and has become a mainstay in midfield for both club and country.

With Manchester United reportedly interest in snapping up the services of the 21-year-old yet again, despite his value skyrocketing to £60m, here are three reasons why Pogba would be perfect for the Red Devils.

He is what they need right now

The fact that Ferguson overlooked a basic flaw in the squad through the last few years of his reign became very apparent last season. The defending champions were unable to cope up with the demands of challenging on both domestic and European front. Without Ferguson, the glue that held an average side together, a threadbare midfield was found out last time around and it is high time the Red Devils signed a world class central midfielder.

Pogba might be just that player. Should United get the man who got away, it might just solve most of their problems. Not only would they have a top class central midfielder, but also a player with charisma, a natural-born leader who would improve the entire midfield and make the side a much more dynamic outfit.

He fits into United’s style of play

Although Manchester United have signed a few central midfielders since Roy Keane’s departure, they haven’t signed anyone of the same ilk. Aside from Michael Carrick, the other signings have been either injured or ineffective most of the time. And even Carrick is a defensive midfielder and not one who goes forward with any real purpose.

Given the fact United have been playing a two-man midfield for the past two decades, they don’t really have anyone who can get up and down the pitch. Pogba will solve that problem and give them some much needed energy from the centre of the park. Since his departure from the club, Pogba has excelled and developed into one of the finest box-to-box midfielders in Europe and one that would fit like a glove at Old Trafford.

He is a complete midfielder

World class central midfielders are hard to come by these days. Especially, when you want someone to hold his own both defensively and offensively. With football becoming increasingly more technical with each passing game, more and more players are evolving into specialized roles. As a result, the number of truly world-class box-to-box midfielders has been on the decline for the past decade or so. But, Pogba is one of the rare few still capable of holding his own in that role.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has the passing range and the dribbling ability to operate as the attacking midfielder, the tactical nous, understanding of the game and defensive discipline to play as a holding midfielder, or play a pivotal part in a two-man midfield. Coming off a season in which he was used further forward, Pogba firmly established his credentials as the brightest central midfielder in Europe at the moment. Not only can he create score goals, the Frenchman is also adept at getting stuck in and that is evident from the fact that nobody made more tackles than him for the Bianconeri last season.

Pogba would present a young, all-round threat in central midfield and a player that the Red Devils could certainly do with. But with Juventus not too keen on selling him, getting him to Old Trafford would be easier said than done. And even if he does come, he won’t be cheap. However, only 21, he looks set to return every penny paid for him, and a whole lot more as well.
