Three Reasons Why Chelsea Will Beat Tottenham

Jose Mourinho

The early kick-off on Sunday sees Chelsea travel a few kilometres to take on London rivals Tottenham both the clubs were in European action in midweek with Chelsea winning 4-0 against Maccabi Tel Aviv and Tottenham qualifying for the next round of the Europa League with a 1-0 away win at Qarabag.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t best pleased with the scheduling of the game, especially since Tottenham played on Thursday almost 6,000 kilometres away before making the trip back to England. Tottenham are however better placed than Chelsea in the league table and are unbeaten since the start of the season when they lost 1-0 to Manchester United.

Chelsea, on the other hand, seem to be getting back on track thanks to two victories from as many games, though the performances have not been at the same level expected from a Chelsea team it is something that the team can build on and hopefully push on for the rest of the season. While Tottenham might be favourites, Chelsea can do some damage as well in this highly anticipated goal fest.

We look ahead to this clash and provide three reasons as to why Chelsea will win this London derby against Tottenham.

The Europa League fixture playing havoc for Tottenham

Tottenham had to travel from Azerbaijan after their Europa League win that in itself would be playing with the fitness and recovery of the players and then having to play an early Sunday fixture against Chelsea certainly will not help their cause.

Mauricio Pochettino might be one of the best managers in the league at the moment, but even he cannot help his team recover this quickly and with Chelsea getting almost two days of complete rest more than Spurs, that extra energy could well help Chelsea in their quest for victory against their London rivals.

Recent history on Chelsea’s side

Cesc Fabregas

Apart from the 5-3 hammering that Chelsea got on New Year’s Eve, the Blues have a great history in this clash. Chelsea in the last ten games against Tottenham have won 4 and lost only once in those games, they would have the psychological advantage, especially against a young Spurs side.

Chelsea have the likes of Fabregas and Terry to count on regarding games against Tottenham and with Cesc Fabregas having played for Arsenal as well, he could be the one player giving Tottenham a run for their money.

A feisty affair could help Chelsea get the victory

Chelsea aren’t playing glorious football, but they could well hold the upper hand if things get a little feisty. Tottenham might be playing the slick and stylish football that has seen them rise up the table and almost be in with a shout of the top four, but Chelsea have the ability to grind and fluster teams to get the results.

Matic, Costa and Cahill would certainly do their best to mess around with the young guns at Tottenham. That could backfire on them as well with Spurs playing some exceptional football but Chelsea have to stop Tottenham playing and that is one of the keys to them winning the game. Chelsea have an uphill struggle to make it into the top four and this could be the game that changes it all.
