North London giants are on the verge of signing Jamie Vardy from the newly crowned champions of England, Leicester City. The 29 year old England international was all set to have a medical examination with the north London giants on Sunday, as reports had earlier stated. If everything turns out to be fine, the star striker could be on his way to the Emirates in the upcoming days, which would be a huge boost for manager Arsene Wenger’s side.
The Frenchman was keen on adding some quality players to his current side in the transfer window, after ending the season trophyless once again. The former Fleetwood Town man contributed to the Foxes success last term, with a tally of 24 league goals to his name and will be an asset for the Gunners this time around.
Once the move gets completed, the French manager will have to fit Vardy into his current side and here are three possible formations that Wenger could choose to deploy:
The first possibility could be that Olivier Giroud could be dropped to the bench and the Englishman could be played as the lone striker up front. He could be accompanied by Alexis Sanchez on the left, Alex Iwobi on the right and Mesut Ozil playing in the number 10 position. Behind him would feature new signing Granit Xhaka, along with Santi Cazorla in the holding midfield role.
Below is shown the formation that could feature from attack to midfield, keeping the defensive line constant for now.
This kind of strategy will only be applied if Wenger wants to play a very attacking style of football. Though, the possibility of such a formation being used is quite rare, it might be desperation that might force the Frenchman to use both strikers at once. In such a case, both Giroud and Vardy would start at the center, with Ozil on the left and Sanchez on the right. Xhaka and Coquelin could be employed in the holding midfield roles, with Cazorla dropped to the bench, keeping the defence unchanged. The formation can be seen below.
Another option would be to play Vardy on the left wing, with Alexis Sanchez on the right and Giroud at the center, as the solo striker. The France international has been scoring goals in the friendly matches and was made to work too hard last season as well, as he had no real support or backup. Giroud can be started as the main man up front, with Welbeck being an option to replace him. Ozil will once again be back in the number 10 role, with the pairing of Xhaka and Cazorla behind him, as shown in the image.
