Three Ice Cool Finishers Who Could Save West Ham’s Season

Share

West Ham United have had a topsy-turvy start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign. Slaven Bilic’s men struggled to get going in the early parts of the season and hence found themselves in the relegation zone and it looked like they were going to be embroiled in the battle to survive the drop. However, a recent upturn of form has seen the Hammers move away from the bottom three, and are now seated in the 13th position of the Premier League table.

However, that isn’t what they would have hoped or envisioned before the start of the season, given their excellent campaign last term. The major issue for the Londoners has been a lack of goals, with none of their strikers delivering when needed. And it is one area where Bilic will be definitely looking to improve in the January window.

Here we give you three strikers who could help the Hammers recover and help them move into the top half of the table:

Jermain Defoe

The former Tottenham striker has been in hot form for relegation battlers Sunderland this term. Defoe at 34, is still going strong and remains one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

Having made his return to the Premier League last term, he helped Sunderland survive the drop single-handedly and has continued in the same vein of form this year as well. The Englishman has scored 11 times already this term, in 20 games and has been the Black Cats’ best player so far.

A proven goalscorer with loads of experience in the English top-flight and in great form right now, Defoe could go a long way in helping West Ham bounce back.

Michy Batshuayi

The Belgian arrived at Chelsea in the summer from French side Marseille, having scored 17 goals in 36 Ligue 1 appearances last term, but has struggled for game time under Antonio Conte. However, whenever given a chance he has shown glimpses of his immense talents.

Batshuayi opened his account for Chelsea in just his second appearance in the league against Watford but that is his only goal so far in the Premier League. However, he has scored twice for the Blues in the League Cup and grabbed a goal in the recently concluded FA Cup tie against Peterborough.

Young, energetic, pacy and possessing a keen eye for a goal, Batshuayi could add a new dimension to the West Ham attack while he himself would be greatly benefited from getting some regular playing time under his belt.

Jordan Rhodes

Jordan Rhodes has become somewhat of a forgotten figure at Middlesbrough this term. Having played a crucial role in the Riverside outfit’s promotion from the Championship with 6 goals in 18 games last term, the 26-year old has hardly been used by manager Aitor Karanka this season.

Rhodes has made only 6 appearances in the league so far, only 2 of which have been starts and has failed to score in those games. However, having scored 185 goals in over 350 appearances throughout his career, Rhodes has shown he has the potential to make it big.

With Boro signing Rudy Gestede earlier this month, it seems very likely that the Scotsman is headed towards the exit doors and West Ham could provide an opportunity for him to revive his career.
