On A Bosman Transfer! – Three Free Agents Leeds United Should Look To Sign

The transfer window of the summer may be done and dusted with, but that doesn’t mean clubs cannot sign new players though. The provision to sign players with no contract i.e., the free agents still exist for the clubs and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see teams taking a dip into the free agent pool to address an issue or two.

Leeds United have had an active summer window, with new manager Thomas Christiansen recruiting heavily over the last two months. They have started off the new season strongly as well, sitting third in the EFL Championship table after five rounds of fixtures. Yet, there may be a couple of areas that the Danish manager would want to strengthen, heading into a long season and here we bring you three free agents that could help the Whites put up a strong title challenge and a bid for promotion.

Chico Flores

The 30-year old is out of contract, after being released by Qatar based club Lekhwiya, where he was playing for the past three years, helping the club to the Qatari top-flight last season.

Chico Flores is someone who has good experience in English football, having spent two years with Swansea City between 2012-2014. The Spaniard was a part of the Swans side that lifted the League Cup in 2013, and made over 50 Premier League appearances for the Welsh outfit.

Having lost loan signing Matthew Pennington to an injury early in the season, Christiansen has just Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper as the senior centre-backs. Conor Shaughnessy has stepped up well, but still needs polishing. Hence, adding another defender wouldn’t be the worst idea for Leeds. Strong in the air, tenacious in his tackles, Flores will add more rigidity and resilience to the Whites’ backline.

Reto Ziegler

The 31-year old was reportedly a target for Leeds last month and the club had even enquired about signing him. Since he is available for free, Christiansen should renew his interest in the player.

The versatile Ziegler can help Leeds a great deal with his ability to slot in at left-back and at centre-back with equal comfort, adding great depth to both positions. Given that the club have a long and arduous road ahead, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for them to bring in more quality player to the squad.

Playing for Swiss club FC Sion last season, Ziegler notched up impressive returns of 9 goals and an assist in 31 games. A proven international player, with relative experience in English football, during his days with Tottenham Hotspur and Wigan Athletic, the defender could prove to be a shrewd buy.

Joe Ledley

The 30-year old was allowed to leave Crystal Palace in the summer, at the end of his contract and is surprisingly hasn’t been picked up by any clubs as of yet.

The vastly experienced Ledley may have fallen down the pecking order at Palace, but still remains a quality addition to any side. Strong tactically and technically, a disciplined operator who adds a combative edge in the midfield, the Wales international is well-versed with the rigours of Championship football, having played 227 times in the English second division with Cardiff City.

The midfield for Leeds has been performing really well, but when a player of Ledley’s experience and proven pedigree becomes available, signing him up makes sense.
